Newport News-based Westmoreland Corp. started the first phase of the development, in a wooded area north of Denbigh Boulevard and just east of Colony Pines, which the company also developed. The plan eventually is to connect Independence with Richneck Road and to connect Huntington to the adjacent Colony Pines neighborhood, but development will take several years.

Since 1985, Wayne Harbin Builder has built homes in a variety of price ranges and communities. Harbin Builder is a Viridiant-certified builder who incorporates environmental considerations into every stage of the home building process. They were also honored as “The 2015 Southern Living Builder Member of the Year,” by Southern Living Custom Builder Program. Harbin is currently offering three different detached home plans in Huntington.

A mixture of single-family homes, condos and apartments are planned, in the New Urbanism-style similar to Port Warwick.

Plans for the development include a 5.5 mile walking trail,  a park with green spaces, ponds, loft apartments over retail shops, and houses mixed in with apartments, with a similar old-style feel of Ghent in Norfolk and Hilton Village in Newport News.

A total of 2,500 units are planned including apartments, condos and single-family homes, though that won’t likely happen for another 10 years.

A main four-lane throughway will cut across the development and connect two major City roadways, Denbigh Boulevard and Ft. Eustis Boulevard. Connector roads feature roundabouts to provide focal points and traffic calming measures. Four regional ponds will provide stormwater runoff areas, and numerous small parks serve as focal points throughout the development.

QHOC Homes and Townhomes Available

Huntington Pointe’s New-Urbanism concept of design, which shows influences of design standards that were prominent until the rise of the automobile in the mid-20th century, is so new, that the City of Newport News is using the “neo-traditional” zoning ordinance for only the second time since it was created in the early 2000s. Once completed, Huntington Pointe will be the largest new neighborhood built in the City since the 1980s.

The first phase, which will include the land between Denbigh Boulevard and the pond, is about 85 acres. In future phases, the development will extend to the north, toward Richneck Road.

The company, led by Lewis McMurran, has developed other projects from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg and has a division in Raleigh, N.C.
