The Cook’s: Moving to Kingsmill and their quest to find the “Perfect Neighborhood”

This is a first in a series of interviews with past home buyer clients I have worked with. Over the next few months, I hope to showcase most of the area neighborhoods and give an “insiders” look at living there. As well as the reasons behind their decisions to purchase in that particular neighborhood.

In 2012 business owners and entrepreneurs Heidi and Chris Cook found themselves moving from the Midwest to the state of Virginia. They didn’t know much about the east coast, let alone which neighborhoods would be best for their growing family.

As they searched for the perfect spot to settle down, the family found themselves visiting the Greater Williamsburg area on weekend excursions more and more frequently. The premium shopping, top-notch tourism destinations and highly-rated restaurants drew them in.

The hills, trees and lush green landscape reminded her of the area she grew up in Michigan.

“Even though Williamsburg is bigger than where we’re from, it really has that small town vibe,” and we love that.

After finding the perfect location, they began to focus on the perfect neighborhood. Working with Williamsburg realtor John Womeldorf, it didn’t take too long before they were shown a beautiful two-story, white colonial with a big backyard in the Whittakers Mill section of Kingsmill.

“It (Kingsmill) felt like home to us,” said Heidi. “It’s just one of the prettiest streets and offers a lot of privacy and wonderful views.”

They were also thrilled to work with John, who they described as “awesome from start to finish”

Located near historic Colonial Williamsburg, on the banks of the James River, Kingsmill on the James is one of Williamsburg’s original master-planned golf communities. Set on 2,900 acres, Kingsmill offers a variety of exclusive neighborhoods set against a backdrop of green hills and forests.

Prospective homeowners have a lot to choose from, including condos, townhomes, villas, single-family and luxurious, waterfront lots. The neighborhood is also host to the Kingsmill Resort & Spa, Virginia’s largest golf resort, boasting 63 holes of world-class golf. Kingsmill also offers its residents a gated community with 24-hour security, tennis, a full-service marina, six restaurants and lounges, outdoor pools, tennis, playgrounds, walking trails and much more.

The Cooks are active members of the community with four young children, so they really enjoy all the amazing amenities within their neighborhood.

Heidi’s husband Chris will spend time on the championship golf course, while Heidi and the kids play tennis and swim. The Cooks keep their pontoon boat in the marina for warmer month excursions with friends and family and often find themselves enjoying the walking trails that traverse the landscape.

“And the rivers are just gorgeous,” added Heidi. “They remind me of the lakes in Michigan.”

Initially, Heidi was worried there might not be enough young children in the neighborhood, so she was pleasantly surprised to discover a playgroup existed, among other child-friend activities.

“‘Within the first week we moved in, we went to a playgroup and to a community picnic where we met tons of other families on our street,” said Heidi. “It was fabulous.”

Chris Cook also appreciates Kingsmill’s proximity to interstate access, since he has to travel to the Southside frequently for work.

Since they first discovered Kingsmill and Greater Williamsburg, the Cooks have embraced the area and have even recently opened a hip new restaurant and brewery called Amber Ox located off Prince George Street in the historical area. Precarious Beer Hall is their latest venture along with partner Andrew Voss

“We feel like we have really found an amazing spot for our family to live and a wonderful community for our businesses to grow,” said Heidi.
