Where We Live in Williamsburg VA: Family-friendly home in Yorkshire

There’s a lot to love about 3 Whitby Court, according to homeowner Dawn Griggs.

Located in the desirable Yorkshire neighborhood off Jamestown Road, the four-bedroom, three and a half bath home caught her eye around ten years ago.

“We were attracted by the outside appearance and the stately setting,” Griggs said, adding that the quiet cul-de-sac location and privacy the landscaping offered further sweetened the pot.

The location of the neighborhood was also particularly attractive to the family. Griggs’ teenage son attended Walsingham Academy at the time, which is adjacent to the neighborhood, so he was able to easily walk to and from lacrosse practices and use the field with friends on the weekends.

For Griggs, she appreciated being able to walk or ride her bike to Colonial Williamsburg and the weekend farmers market.

The house was move-in ready when the family purchased it, but Griggs and her husband put their stamp on the home with built-ins and landscaping, among several other upgrades. They converted one of the two gas fireplaces to wood-burning, so the family gets the best of both worlds.

They also added the impressive stone walkway and terrace leading up to the front door from the cul-de-sac. Previously, the front door was accessed via a path from the driveway off to the side of the house, which Griggs didn’t find particularly welcoming.

Griggs, a gardener, has taken good care of the yard, which includes fig trees, rose bushes, hydrangeas and perennials, to name a few. A winter garden, consisting of winterberry, holly and boxwoods are great for cutting and bringing inside as decorations. She appreciates that the lawn is very beautiful but there’s not a lot of grass that requires mowing.

There is another big perk of the home which Griggs didn’t realize until she was living in it.
