American Vintage Expands in Williamsburg: A Bigger Home for One of My Favorite Local Finds

By John Womeldorf | Mr Williamsburg.com

If you’ve been around me for more than five minutes, you know I love unique places.

Not chain stores.
Not cookie-cutter shopping centers.
Not “same thing you can buy online.”

I’m talking about the spots that have personality. Craftsmanship. A story.

And that’s exactly why American Vintage has always been one of my favorite hidden gems in the Greater Williamsburg area.

🎉 A Big Weekend: Grand Opening on Richmond Road

Here’s the good news:

American Vintage is officially opening its new, expanded location this weekend at:

📍 6500 Richmond Road, Williamsburg Phone (757) 208-0096

With special grand opening hours:

  • Saturday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Sunday: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

And yes… they’ve promised some sneak peeks leading up to it. 👀

If you’ve ever been curious about this place, this is the weekend to go.

From Lightfoot Road to a Full-Blown Showroom

For years, American Vintage was tucked away on Lightfoot Road.

If you knew, you knew.

Now, they’ve moved into the former Charlie’s Antiques building on Richmond Road — and the difference is huge.

We’re talking:

✔️ More space
✔️ More inventory
✔️ Bigger custom projects on display
✔️ Room to actually walk around and explore

It finally matches the scale of what they’ve become.

Why I Love This Place (And Why It’s Different)

Here’s the thing.

American Vintage isn’t just about “finding stuff.”

It’s about making stuff.

The owner started out years ago with his first location up in Toano, working with reclaimed materials and building custom pieces long before “reclaimed wood” became trendy.

Since then, the business has grown — a lot — but the heart of it hasn’t changed.

When you walk in, you’ll see:

  • Live-edge dining tables
  • Custom cabinets made from reclaimed lumber
  • One-of-a-kind furniture pieces
  • Restored architectural elements
  • Industrial, farmhouse, and vintage finds
  • Custom work being done on-site

You can literally watch craftsmanship happen.

That’s rare these days.

Note: some of these photos are from the previous location. But will give you a sense of what you will see.

“Like American Pickers… But Legit”

I’ve told more than one person this:

American Vintage is like American Pickers — but real.

Not staged.
Not touristy.
Not gimmicky.

And definitely not a merch shop.

Side note…

I once visited the “American Pickers” store in Nashville.

Total letdown.

It was basically wall-to-wall T-shirts and branded mugs.

No soul. No substance.

This is the opposite of that.

This is the real deal.

Why Places Like This Matter in Williamsburg

One of the things I love most about Williamsburg is that we still have room for businesses like this.

We’re not just:

  • Outlet malls
  • Big-box stores
  • Franchise restaurants

We still have:

✔️ Craftspeople
✔️ Makers
✔️ Independent owners
✔️ Creative risk-takers

American Vintage fits right into that fabric.

It makes our community better.

And frankly, more interesting.

If You’ve Never Been — Go

If you’ve never visited before, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Even if you don’t “need” furniture.

Even if you’re “just looking.”

You’ll walk out inspired.

And maybe with something you didn’t know you needed.

Why I Write These Articles (And Why That Matters)

People often ask me why I spend so much time writing about places like this.

Here’s the honest answer:

Because real estate isn’t just about houses.

It’s about lifestyle.

It’s about:

  • Where you shop
  • Where you eat
  • Who you support
  • What kind of community you’re joining

When someone moves to Williamsburg, they’re not just buying square footage.

They’re buying into a way of life.

And I see my role as helping people understand that.

About Me: Meet Your Local Guide — Mr. Williamsburg

If you’re new here, welcome.

I’m John Womeldorf, also known as Mr. Williamsburg.

For more than 20 years, I’ve helped people buy and sell homes across Greater Williamsburg, Hampton Roads, Richmond, and everywhere in between — from Virginia Beach to the North Carolina line and west of Richmond.

But I’ve never seen myself as “just” a Realtor.

I’m a local ambassador first.

I help people figure out:

  • Where they’ll feel at home
  • Which neighborhoods fit their lifestyle
  • What newcomers don’t know to ask
  • How to avoid costly mistakes
  • And how to truly enjoy living here

Through my “Every Home Has a Story” series, neighborhood guides, and local features like this one, I try to document what makes this region special.

And yes — someday, I will retire.

When that day comes, I want MrWilliamsburg.com to stand as a living library of everything I’ve learned about this area: its neighborhoods, its people, and its hidden gems.

That’s the legacy I’m building.

Not just transactions.

But trust.

And community.

Final Thought

Congrats to American Vintage on this exciting new chapter.

A bigger space.
A better showcase.
And still the same heart.

I’ll be stopping by this weekend — and I hope I’ll see some of you there too.
