Blue Heron Restaurant Reopens in Charles City — A Beloved Waterfront Gem Gets a New Lease on Life
Date: May 14, 2025
By John Womeldorf
As an avid boater and lifelong foodie, I’ve learned there are few pleasures that rival tying off your boat after a cruise and stepping into a riverside restaurant for a cold drink and a great meal. It’s the kind of simple joy that feels like a mini vacation, even if you’re only 30 minutes from home. But truth be told, there are very few true waterfront dining spots in our region—especially ones that are accessible by boat—so when one reopens, it’s more than just another restaurant launch. It’s an event.
That’s why I’m so excited to share the news that The Blue Heron Restaurant, a longtime favorite on the Chickahominy River, is reopening at River’s Rest Marina and Resort in Charles City. Whether you’re a local, a camper, a marina regular, or a recreational river rat like myself, this is news worth celebrating. The new chapter begins Memorial Day Weekend 2025, just in time for the kickoff of the boating season.
A Familiar Favorite, Reimagined
The Blue Heron isn’t new to me—and if you’ve been boating these waters for any length of time, chances are you’ve docked there too. My family and I have pulled up to the marina countless times over the years while cruising the Chickahominy, whether for a spontaneous lunch, a post-fishing drink, or a celebratory dinner with fellow river-goers. It always felt like the perfect pause button—river breezes, comfort food, a cold beer in hand, and a front-row seat to sunset over the water.

So when I heard that the restaurant had closed last year, I was more than a little disappointed. But now, it’s been given new life thanks to Billy Bryan, a respected Richmond restaurateur and owner of Whisk, the popular French bakery and café in Shockoe Bottom. Billy’s no stranger to Charles City or the Blue Heron—he once lived just two doors down and dined at the restaurant frequently with his family, who’ve lived in the area for over two decades.
“This place has been a constant in my life for more than 20 years,” he said. “We’ve had birthdays, celebrations, even first dates here. When I heard they were looking for a new operator, it felt like the universe tapped me on the shoulder.”
A New Menu, a New Vibe—But with Respect for the Past
Bryan plans to honor the Blue Heron’s roots while modernizing the experience to appeal to both boaters and local residents. The updated menu promises approachable southern-inspired fare with plenty of fresh seafood, hearty sandwiches, housemade sides, and comfort foods like fried chicken. He’s bringing his Whisk know-how to elevate the quality without losing the Blue Heron’s laid-back charm.
“We’ll have a really good, handmade burger,” Bryan said, “but also sides made from scratch, rotating specials, and a few nods to the old Blue Heron favorites.” The full-service bar will be back as well—another welcome addition for boaters and weekend warriors alike.
Plans also include breakfast service on weekends, with lunch and dinner seven days a week. And for those who enjoy a little entertainment with their meal, Bryan will be hosting Texas Hold ‘Em nights, karaoke, and live music—making the restaurant not just a dining destination, but a true gathering place.
A Big Investment in More Than Just a Restaurant
The reopening of the Blue Heron isn’t just a surface-level refresh. Behind the scenes, the restaurant’s kitchen has been fully renovated, the roof replaced, HVAC upgraded, and cosmetic changes made throughout. It’s a serious investment—one Bryan made in partnership with the owners of River’s Rest, 1850 Investments, the same Richmond-based group that’s been revitalizing the entire marina and resort since their 2022 purchase.
That includes a 21-room inn, 126 seasonal RV campsites, 68 boat slips, a pool, a dog park, and a fully stocked marina store—which, in a humorous twist, Bryan will also manage.
“I never thought I’d be selling croissants and fishing worms at the same time,” he joked, referring to his simultaneous roles as pastry chef and tackle shop manager.
A Bright Future for River’s Rest—and the Blue Heron
From where I sit—sometimes literally in a captain’s chair on the Chickahominy—this is more than just the reopening of a restaurant. It’s the restoration of a riverside tradition. River’s Rest has always been a favorite stop for local boaters, campers, and day-trippers, and now with the Blue Heron coming back under thoughtful, passionate ownership, the whole property is once again set to be a hub of activity.
Location: 9100 Wilcox Neck Rd, Charles City, VA 23030

The team at 1850 Investments has made it clear they’re committed to making the resort a year-round destination, and with Bryan on board, that vision feels more achievable than ever. Their goal isn’t just to serve meals—it’s to create a place where memories are made, where friends gather after a day on the water, and where locals and out-of-towners alike feel welcome.
My Take: Why This Reopening Matters
I write about more than just real estate. I share stories like this because they capture what makes life in our corner of Virginia so unique. Waterfront dining is rare here, and when we lose a place like the Blue Heron, we lose part of that relaxed, river-connected lifestyle so many of us cherish. I’m glad to see it making a return—not just out of nostalgia, but because I genuinely believe it’s going to be better than ever.
So if you’re heading out on the water this summer, do yourself a favor—put the Blue Heron back on your radar. Cruise up the Chickahominy, grab a dock slip, and treat yourself to something delicious with a view. You’ll likely see me doing the same.
