Cap2Cap Cottage Nears 100 Glowing Reviews — From Skeptics to Superfans in the Heart of Charles City
By John Womeldorf, Mr. Williamsburg
When I first decided to open an Airbnb on six quiet acres in rural Charles City, Virginia, more than a few people raised an eyebrow.
“Who’s going to stay out there?”
“Isn’t that kind of… in the middle of nowhere?”
“You’re a real estate guy, not a bed-and-breakfast guy!”
But I had a vision.
Cap2Cap Cottage started as a passion project. A home base for cyclists riding the Virginia Capital Trail—just a quarter mile away. The name reflects that idea, and the interior is filled with bike-themed décor, vintage trail maps, and thoughtful design touches throughout. I wanted it to be the kind of place I wished existed during my own travels: quiet, comfortable, well-stocked, and relaxing.

Fast-forward to today: we’ve now hosted over 100 guests, and we’re closing in on our 100th five-star review. Some stayed for a weekend, others for months. What’s most rewarding? Many of them leave saying the same thing: “We didn’t want to leave.”
Built for Cyclists… and So Much More
Yes, Cap2Cap Cottage was designed with cyclists in mind, but it turns out we’ve tapped into something broader. The home has become a favorite for wedding parties, road trippers, RVers, remote workers, history buffs, and—maybe most unexpectedly—fishermen.
Being close to both the James and Chickahominy Rivers has made us a go-to for anglers, and the ample space to park boats, trailers, and RVs has been a major draw. One group brought two trailers and still had room to sit around the fire pit after a day on the water.
“We needed a place to stay for the winter with space to park our RV, and this was perfect. Quiet, comfortable, and plenty of room for everything we brought with us. It felt like home.”
Five Stars Across the Board: The Reviews Speak for Themselves
From the beginning, my goal was to go beyond basic and create something memorable. That means extras in every room: snacks, toiletries, spare toothbrushes, razors, and all the little touches that make guests feel cared for—not just accommodated.
“Forgot your toothbrush? Ran out of creamer? Need a quick snack? All items available at this lovely house.” – Terry, Washington, DC
“Immaculately kept and smelled fresh. I usually spray a home down with Lysol before unpacking—but not here. Spotless. John doesn’t miss a thing.” – Joyce, October 2024
“The kitchen was stocked with everything you’d need to cook a full meal. It was perfect for our family.” – Krystyn, November 2024
“Clean, spacious, and well appointed. Peaceful quiet setting, exactly as we wanted.” – Mary, Odessa, FL
“This is not my first time and definitely not my last. John is fantastic to work with, and the home is perfect.” – Joseph, PA
Guests have appreciated how accommodating we are—especially when life events require flexibility.
“My daughter was getting married down the road. John gave me an early check-in and extra time for check-out. He made sure the mother of the bride was happy. 10/10 for sure!” – Joyce
Quiet, Nature, and the Occasional Bald Eagle
Despite being within 30 minutes of both Colonial Williamsburg and downtown Richmond, Cap2Cap feels a world away. Guests consistently highlight the serenity, privacy, and natural beauty.
“Lovely quiet location. Sitting outside with the burn pit roaring was very relaxing and enjoyable.” – Karen, Cayman Islands
“We saw a bald eagle just across the street. A bonus was the beautiful nature nearby!” – Reuben, Washington, DC
The property is also pet-friendly, with plenty of room for dogs to roam (leashed, as it’s not fenced). We’ve added thoughtful features for four-legged guests too, like doggie towel hooks and an entryway mat for muddy paws.
“Our dog loved having a huge yard to explore. We appreciated the hooks and tray for all our doggie extras. HIGHLY recommend!” – Joseph, March 2025
Designed and Renovated With Intention
Like my other Airbnb—the soon-to-open Levi Hall Farmhouse Inn in Blairs—Cap2Cap Cottage wasn’t a turnkey project. It took vision, sweat, and a fair number of contractor calls. I handled all the design myself, from finishes and fixtures to furnishings. No designers, no staging companies. Just a passion for creating something warm, useful, and full of character.
“He’s put so much thought into what his guests might need. Great closet space, games to play, everything for the kitchen, even dispensers for shampoo and soap.” – Joseph
What’s Next?
As we approach our 100th public review, I can’t help but feel grateful. Hosting at Cap2Cap has connected me with incredible people and taught me a ton about hospitality. It’s also made me rethink what it means to be a great host—not just a landlord with linens, but someone who helps create travel memories.
And the journey isn’t slowing down—we’re just about ready to open Levi Hall Farmhouse Inn in Blairs, Virginia! This 1900-era farmhouse has been lovingly restored and will soon offer four en suite guest rooms, shared common areas, and peaceful surroundings just minutes from hiking, tubing, wineries, and historic small towns.

While the professional photos are coming soon, one of the suites is already listed on Airbnb if you’d like to take a look or explore booking a stay:

Admittedly, the current photos aren’t quite ready for the cover of Southern Living—but I’d be thrilled if you’d favorite the listing or share the link with a friend to help us build some early momentum on Airbnb.
Between Cap2Cap and Levi Hall, I’ve come to realize this isn’t just a side hustle—it’s a passion. Whether you’re planning a bike trip, a fishing weekend, a quiet getaway, or a multigenerational family escape, I’ve tried to build places where people feel not just welcome—but at home.
