Finding Home: The Journey of Tim and Laurie McNemar
I first met Tim and Laurie McNemar in 2011 when they were looking to relocate from Northern Virginia to Williamsburg. At the time, Tim was still working with NASA, and they were eager to find a place that felt like home. After exploring different areas, they fell in love with Queens Lake, a charming, well-established neighborhood known for its mature trees, spacious lots, and strong sense of community. We found them the perfect home, one that truly felt like a retreat from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia. You can read more about their Queens Lake home and journey here.

Fast forward to 2019, and their priorities had shifted. The large yard they once loved had become more of a burden, and they were ready for a lower-maintenance lifestyle. After a diligent search, they decided on a brand-new townhome in Quarterpath, a vibrant community near Riverside Hospital. They loved the convenience of being on that side of town, and the two-story layout with a first-floor primary bedroom seemed like the ideal fit. If you’re curious about Quarterpath and what it has to offer, you can explore it further here.

But as the saying goes, “You don’t always know until you try.” By 2022, they realized that city life—and attached living—just wasn’t for them. To paraphrase Green Acres, they were ready to say, City life ain’t for me! They missed the feel of an established neighborhood, the privacy of a detached home, and the charm of a yard they could call their own. This led them to Kingspoint, an established community with history, character, and a bit more breathing room. Their cozy cottage in Kingspoint became their next chapter, and you can read about that home here.

And then came 2025. With another big life change on the horizon, Tim and Laurie decided it was time to move closer to family in Georgia. Once again, I had the honor of listing and selling their home—this time in Kingspoint—and helping them transition to what they hope will be their forever home.
The Takeaway
There’s a lesson in their story. While I’ve worked with plenty of people who have lived in the same home for 40+ years, for others, finding the perfect fit is a journey—one that evolves with time, lifestyle, and priorities. Sometimes, you don’t truly know if a house is “home” until you live there for a while. And sometimes, even when a home feels right at one stage of life, a few years later, your needs and desires shift.
Tim and Laurie’s story is a great example of how Williamsburg offers so many diverse communities, each catering to different life stages and preferences. Whether you’re searching for a low-maintenance townhome, a historic neighborhood, or a private retreat, there’s a place here for you.
If you’re considering a move—whether to Williamsburg or from Williamsburg—I’d love to help you find the right fit for your next chapter.
