Friday Cheers: Richmond’s Best-Kept (Not-So-Secret) Live Music Gem
If you know me, you know I’m an avid music lover. And if you really know me, you know I travel extensively to see live music and support artists at every opportunity. One of my absolute favorite concert series—and one I’ve been attending for as long as I can remember—is Friday Cheers in Richmond.

Why Friday Cheers? Because They Know What’s Up
Friday Cheers has an uncanny ability to book artists who are just about to explode onto the national scene. Over the years, we’ve seen some now-household names take the stage for just ten bucks—a deal so good, it almost feels illegal.
Ever heard of Alabama Shakes? How about Tyler Childers? Sierra Ferrell? The Head & the Heart? Tank & the Bangas? If you saw them at Friday Cheers back in the day, you probably still brag about it (and rightfully so). And with their 2025 lineup, I have no doubt we’ll be adding some new names to that list soon.
The Perfect Spot to Soak in the Sounds
Set against the scenic backdrop of Brown’s Island, Friday Cheers isn’t just about the music—it’s about the atmosphere. You’re right beside the James River, with space to spread out, bring your chairs, and enjoy a gorgeous Richmond evening. The food truck lineup is always solid, and yes, there’s plenty of wine and beer to keep things festive.

Parking? Well, let’s just say you’ll get your steps in. There’s plenty of it within a few blocks, but you’ll probably have to pay. Pro tip: book an Airbnb instead of a hotel—there are so many unique stays nearby, and you’ll get a real feel for what it’s like to live like a local. We typically bring our bikes, and Richmond is an excellent city for cycling. Between the Virginia Capital Trail, the Canal Walk, and the cobblestone streets of Shockoe Bottom, it’s a great way to explore before the music starts.
Who’s Playing in 2025?
This year’s lineup is another mix of up-and-coming stars and Richmond favorites, and I have a feeling at least one of these bands will be a big name in no time:
🎶 May 2: Chaparelle with Jack Wharff & The Tobacco Flatts
🎶 May 9: Bully with Rikki Rakki
🎶 May 23: RVA Music Night (Dogpark, Caroline Vain, Weekend Plans)
🎶 May 30: Josiah and the Bonnevilles with Jonathan Paige Brown Jr.
🎶 June 6: Kashus Culpepper with Ramona & The Holy Smokes
🎶 June 13: La Lom with Afro-Zen Allstars
🎶 June 20: The War and Treaty with Mekong Xpress & The Get Fresh Horns
🎶 June 27: Say She She with Big Fancy
At just $10 in advance ($15 at the door) and kids under 12 free, it’s easily the best deal in town for live music. Or, if you’re like me and plan to hit most of the shows, just grab a season pass for only $55 before March 2 (then it goes up to $65—still a steal).
See You There?
If you’re looking for a laid-back, affordable, and top-tier live music experience, Friday Cheers is the move. And if you see me there, don’t be surprised—I’ll probably be front and center, soaking it all in.
For tickets and all the details, check out Venture Richmond’s website or follow Friday Cheers on Facebook and Instagram. And remember to use #CheersRVA so we can all relive the best moments together.
Because if there’s one thing I believe in, it’s this: support live music. See you at Brown’s Island!
If you’ve made it this far, you’re probably wondering, Who is this guy, and why is he so passionate about live music, cycling, and Airbnb recommendations? Well, I’m John Womeldorf, aka Mr. Williamsburg, a local real estate expert, avid music lover, and professional wanderer. By day, I help people find their dream homes in Williamsburg and beyond, and by night, I’m chasing down the best live music within a reasonable driving distance (which, in my book, is anywhere east of the Mississippi). I share these stories because I believe great communities aren’t just about houses—they’re about experiences, connections, and, yes, the occasional late-night food truck stop after a killer show.
If you ever need advice on real estate, where to catch a great band, or the best cycling route to a concert venue, I’m your guy. Give me a call, shoot me an email, or check out my website—I’m always happy to chat.
