Growing Together in Williamsburg: How the Community Garden Brings Neighbors, Food, and Purpose Together

By John Womeldorf, A.K.A. Mr. Williamsburg

One of the things that makes Greater Williamsburg such a special place to live isn’t just the history, the neighborhoods, or the scenery — it’s the people quietly doing good work behind the scenes.

A great example of that is Williamsburg Community Growers, a local nonprofit that operates a thriving community garden and teaching farm right here in our backyard.

If you’ve ever thought about growing your own food, volunteering locally, or simply connecting with neighbors in a meaningful way, this is an organization worth knowing about.

🌱 A Garden with a Bigger Mission

Williamsburg Community Growers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a simple but powerful vision: to grow a healthier, more connected local food system.

Their teaching farm and community garden sits on a 10-acre parcel between Warhill High School and the Warhill Sports Complex. Over the years, it has become a hub for:

Donating tons of fresh produce to community organizations Offering free workshops and plant sales Supporting local schools and educators Training volunteers and new gardeners Demonstrating real-world conservation practices

This isn’t just about tomatoes and cucumbers — it’s about education, access, and community.

🪴 Want to Grow Your Own? Rent a Garden Plot

Currently, there are only a limited number of plots left as of February 4 .One of the most popular programs is their community garden membership.

Members can rent their own plot and grow fresh produce from spring through fall, with a lot of the hard work already taken care of.

What’s Included:

Water access Compost (when available) Leaf mulch Deer fencing Initial tilling Shared tools and wheelbarrows

You bring the seeds, the time, and the curiosity — they provide the infrastructure.

2026 Membership Fees:

10’ x 10’ plot: $75 10’ x 20’ plot: $150

No experience is required. In fact, many longtime gardeners are happy to share tips and help newcomers get started.

🤝 Not a Gardener? You Can Still Get Involved

You don’t need to rent a plot to be part of this community.

Williamsburg Community Growers also welcomes volunteers who want to help with:

Planting and harvesting Maintaining beds and pathways Educational programs Special events Teaching farm operations

It’s a great way to get outdoors, learn something new, and contribute to something that matters.

If you’ve been looking for a hands-on volunteer opportunity that actually makes a local impact, this is one of the best options around.

📚 Free Workshops & Plant Sales

Another bonus: WCG regularly hosts free educational workshops and seasonal plant sales.

These are fantastic resources whether you’re:

A first-time gardener A backyard hobbyist A lifelong green thumb Or just curious

It’s practical, approachable education — no pressure, no sales pitch.

🌍 Why This Matters for Our Community

As someone who’s spent more than two decades helping people choose where to live, I’ve learned this:

People don’t just fall in love with houses.

They fall in love with communities.

Organizations like Williamsburg Community Growers help make this area stronger, healthier, and more connected. They improve food access, build relationships, and create spaces where neighbors actually know each other.

That matters.

Whether you’re new to Williamsburg, downsizing, raising a family, or settling into retirement, these kinds of community anchors make life here richer.
