Historic Manor Home and 309 Waterfront Acres to be auctioned on June 26, 2014 in Surry VA

Named for the distance of a prominent landmark from Jamestown, Four Mile Tree traces its history to the earliest British settlers of Virginia. Claimed in a 1625 land grant by John Burrows, Four Mile Tree was (and is) unmatched for its commanding, elevated views up and down the James River and across to what today is Williamsburg.

Located in Surry County, the 309± acre estate has .95± miles of James River frontage with exceptional elevations, 60 to 90 feet above the James. The Manor Home (circa 1745) is on the National Register of Historic Places.   

In addition to the manor home, other historic and noteworthy improvements include a caretaker’s cottage (circa 1753; moved to its current location in the 1970’s and also on the National Historic Register), modern pier/boathouse, historic and walled graveyard, traditional barn, modern metal “butler” storage building, concrete silo and various wooden sheds and out buildings. The graveyard contains the oldest known, legible headstone in Virginia (and one of the oldest in North America, 1650).

“The home is lovely and sound but in need of updating,” says Bill Londrey of Tranzon Fox. “It’s a premier estate home waiting to happen. The only thing that overshadows the home is the site; I’m not aware of another James River property with both the high elevations and sandy beaches along the water."   

“This is going to be a good, old fashioned live, on-site auction.” Londrey points out. "We want to make it easy for anyone to participate and feel comfortable doing so.”
