James City County Turns 250 — and Turns Up the Volume — with a Music-Forward Celebration at Jamestown Beach

If you know me at all, you know this: I’m a music lover first and foremost. Live music, especially when it’s done right and done locally, is my happy place. So when I saw the lineup for James City County’s 250th Commemoration, I’ll be honest — I got genuinely excited. This isn’t just a historical milestone. This is James City County stepping up in a big way and saying music matters.

From April 17–19, 2026, the county will host a three-day celebration called Revolutionary Rhythms at Jamestown Beach Event Park, and the musical headliners alone make this weekend a must-attend event.

Organized by James City County in partnership with CultureFix, the weekend blends history, family activities, food, and — most importantly — national touring bands that bring real energy and credibility to the stage.

Friday Night Kickoff: Plain White T’s

Friday, April 17

Gates Open: 6:00 p.m. Opening Act: 6:30 p.m. Headliner: 7:45 p.m.

The weekend kicks off with Plain White T’s, a band that instantly transports you back to the era of sing-along choruses, upbeat hooks, and crowd-pleasing pop-rock anthems. This is the kind of booking that tells you the county is serious — not background music, not a cover band, but a national act with real reach and recognition.

Expect big energy, great vibes, and a packed lawn of people actually watching the stage — not just wandering past it. Food trucks and beverages will be available on site, making this an ideal Friday night spring outing.

Saturday: Family Fun by Day, Legendary Funk by Night

Saturday Daytime Festival

Saturday, April 18 | 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The daytime hours are all about community and family, with:

Face painting, balloon and caricature artists Photo booths Tethered hot air balloon rides ($) Americana-themed local artisans and crafts Food trucks and hands-on activities for all ages

This portion of the weekend makes it easy to bring kids, grandparents, and everyone in between — a true multigenerational celebration.

Saturday Night Headliner: Kool & The Gang

Gates Open: 6:30 p.m. Headliner: 7:30 p.m.

Then comes the moment I really started smiling.

Kool & The Gang closes out Saturday night — and honestly, this is a home-run booking. This is iconic, cross-generational music that brings everyone to their feet. Funk. Soul. R&B. Songs you know instantly and can’t help but move to.

This is the kind of performance that turns a local celebration into a shared cultural moment — parents, kids, longtime residents, newcomers — all dancing together on the same lawn.

Food trucks and beverages will again be available, and if you’ve ever seen Kool & The Gang live, you know the energy doesn’t fade — it builds.

Drone Show Finale: A Sky-High Celebration

Saturday, April 18 | 9:15 p.m.

Following the concert, the weekend reaches its visual peak with a 3D drone show finale, lighting up the sky with patriotic and Americana-themed imagery. It’s a modern, dramatic way to honor 250 years of history — and a perfect capstone to an unforgettable night of music.

If you’ve never experienced a 3D drone show before, prepare to be absolutely blown away. Hundreds of synchronized drones move in perfect formation, creating massive, glowing images that feel part art installation, part storytelling, and part jaw-dropping spectacle. Unlike fireworks, drone shows are quiet enough to hear the crowd react in real time — gasps, cheers, and that collective wow moment when the sky suddenly transforms. It’s modern technology meeting tradition in the best possible way, and it’s the kind of finale people will be talking about long after the music fades.

Sunday: History on the Move

Why This Matters (And Why I’m Thrilled)

As someone who attends live shows regularly and deeply appreciates what music brings to a community, I can’t say this enough: this matters.

James City County didn’t just plan a commemoration — they invested in quality music, real performers, and an experience that elevates the entire weekend. Booking bands like Plain White T’s and Kool & The Gang signals that live music is being taken seriously here, and I couldn’t be happier to see it.

This is how you celebrate a milestone — by bringing people together, across generations, through music.
