SPECIAL EVENTS

Reading of the Declaration of Independence

Thomas Jefferson begins a day of pageantry, celebration, and reflection.

Salute to the States

The Virginia Military Garrison presents a special muster in commemoration of the 245th anniversary of the birth of our nation and a salute to the original thirteen states of the Union.

A Community Salute to America

The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band celebrates the return of live music with a program of patriotic favorites and uplifting musical selections in this one-hour performance. The concert will be followed by a special video presentation, produced by the City of Williamsburg, William & Mary, and Colonial Williamsburg that will honor the frontline workers, first responders, and local organizations who rose to meet the challenges our community faced over the past year and a half.

Created Equal

The Declaration of Independence asserts that ‘all men are created equal’ and are endowed with certain unalienable rights – ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’. When those words were written, over 52 percent of Williamsburg’s population was enslaved. Experience this museum theatre exploration of African American perspectives on the Declaration, the revolutions it inspired, and the ongoing struggle for equality and freedom in America.

Noon Reading of the Declaration of Independence

Residents of the 18th-century Williamsburg community read the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Courthouse and surrounding area. Immediately following, they share their personal perspectives on the meaning of this historic document.

Honor & Reflection

The Juneteenth programming concludes at 9 p.m. with the debut of Honor & Reflection, a contemplative multimedia installation at the ongoing excavation of the historic First Baptist Church’s first permanent location of South Nassau Street in the Historic Area. The installation will be on view nightly through July 4, 8:30-10:30 p.m. Weather depending.
