Long-Term Traffic Shift Begins on I-64 West as Segment C Widening Moves Forward

Starting as early as April 6, VDOT crews will begin a long-term traffic shift on I-64 westbound, from just east of the Route 199 Lightfoot exit (Exit 234) to the New Kent/James City County line. This is part of the Segment C phase of the ongoing I-64 Gap Widening Project.

To implement the shift, overnight single-lane closures will occur for approximately two weeks, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Saturday. Once in place, traffic will be shifted about 5 feet to the right, with temporary barriers installed. This shift is expected to remain in place through summer 2026. A similar shift was completed on the eastbound lanes in March.

Segment C includes widening 9 miles of I-64, rehabilitating pavement, and repairing two bridges over Six Mount Zion Road. Additional upgrades include sound barrier walls, storm drainage, new overhead signs, and paving the Lightfoot Park and Ride lot.

The larger I-64 Gap Widening initiative aims to improve safety and ease congestion between Richmond and Hampton Roads, expanding the corridor from two to three lanes in each direction across 29 miles.
