Merchants Square Announces Its 2026 Free Concert Series in Williamsburg, VA — And This Is a Big One
By: John Womeldorf/ Mr Williamsburg
If you know me at all, you know how much I love live music — especially great live music played outdoors, in a walkable, historic setting, with neighbors, friends, and families all coming together. Williamsburg does this kind of thing well, and when it works, it really works.
What surprised me, though, is that I haven’t seen this lineup mentioned anywhere yet. So for many of you, this may be the first place you’re hearing about the 2026 Merchants Square Free Concert Series.

And honestly? It deserves attention.
When the full lineup crossed my desk, I’ll be straight with you — I got excited. Really excited.
This is not your average “background music while you wander” kind of concert series. The caliber of talent coming to Merchants Square in 2026 is impressive by any standard: nationally touring artists, Grammy Award winners, and bands with serious followings. And best of all…
Every single concert is free.
Yes. Free.
Held in the heart of Merchants Square, this outdoor concert series blends historic Williamsburg with modern culture in exactly the right way. No tickets. No gates. No barriers. Just show up, grab a spot, and enjoy live music in one of the most iconic settings in Virginia.
All concerts begin at 6:00 PM, are family-friendly, and are open to the public.
2026 Merchants Square Free Concert Schedule & Artist Highlights
May 1 — West Texas Exiles
Americana / Alt-Country | Austin, Texas
The 2026 season kicks off with West Texas Exiles, a band that knows how to tell a story. Their sound is rooted in classic country songwriting, layered with modern Americana grit and road-tested musicianship. Tight harmonies, thoughtful lyrics, and a genuine Texas feel make this an ideal opener for the series.
If you appreciate authentic Americana and well-crafted songs, this is a “don’t miss” show.

June 5 — Co Pilot
Americana / Pop Rock | Boston, Massachusetts
Boston-based Co Pilot brings a polished, hook-driven sound that blends Americana with pop-rock energy. Strong songwriting, dynamic performances, and a growing national following have made them a standout on the touring circuit.
This is the kind of band that surprises people live — and wins them over quickly.

July 3 — Alison Brown Quintet
Grammy Award-Winning Bluegrass / Instrumental | Nashville, Tennessee
This one is a big deal.
Led by Grammy Award-winning banjoist Alison Brown, this quintet pushes bluegrass far beyond traditional boundaries, blending jazz, contemporary instrumental music, and bluegrass into something truly special. Alison Brown is a former President of the International Bluegrass Music Association and one of the most respected musicians in the genre.
Seeing this level of artistry — in Merchants Square, outdoors, for free — is remarkable.

August 7 — Amelia Day
Folk Rock / Singer-Songwriter | Nashville, Tennessee
Amelia Day brings emotionally rich, introspective folk-rock with expressive vocals and modern production. Her songwriting draws from classic folk traditions while speaking directly to today’s audiences.
This is a perfect mid-summer show for listeners who appreciate lyric-driven music with heart and substance.

September 4 — Clay Street Unit
Jamgrass / Country | Denver, Colorado
If you like high-energy shows, strong musicianship, and a little improvisation, Clay Street Unit is going to be a crowd favorite. Hailing from Denver, they blend jamgrass, country, and roots rock into a sound that’s built for live performance.
Expect a lively crowd and a lot of movement.

October 2 — Pressing Strings
Indie Folk / Soul | Annapolis, Maryland
Closing out the 2026 season is Pressing Strings, a band known for blending indie folk, soul, and rock into a powerful live experience. Thoughtful songwriting, soulful vocals, and genre-blurring arrangements have earned them national recognition.
A perfect way to wrap up the series.

Why the Merchants Square Concert Series Matters
One of the things I love most about Williamsburg is that we show up for events like this. The Merchants Square concert series isn’t just about booking bands — it’s about creating shared experiences that bring locals, visitors, families, and music lovers together.
High-quality live music.
A historic Williamsburg backdrop.
No ticket fees.
No barriers to entry.
That combination is rare — and it’s worth celebrating.

One of the things that really elevates these concerts is everything that surrounds them. Merchants Square is packed with great places to eat and drink, many of which are perfect for grabbing something beforehand — or even picking up food and heading straight to the music.
You’ve got longtime favorites like Dog Street Pub, The Cheese Shop, Fat Canary, Blue Talon Bistro, and Berret’s Seafood Restaurant & Taphouse Grill — all within an easy walk of the concert area.
One spot that really checks a lot of boxes is Precarious Beer Project, which now features two in-house food concepts. Electric Circus Taco serves up creative street tacos, wings, nachos, and late-night favorites, while Old Dominion Burger is home to Williamsburg’s original smashburger, plus hand-cut fries, smoked wings, and classic comfort food. It’s an easy, casual option if you want great food, great beer, and zero stress before the music starts.
If you’re in the mood for pizza, Mellow Mushroom is always a solid choice, and if drinks are more your focus, the Williamsburg Winery Tasting Room & Bar is right there as well.
Coffee, dessert, and after-dinner treats are also well covered with Aromas Café, Eleva Coffee Lounge, Secret Garden Café, Baskin Robbins, and The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg all close by.
That’s part of what makes these concerts so special — you’re not just going to hear live music. You’re enjoying a full Williamsburg evening: dinner, drinks, live music, a stroll through historic streets, and maybe dessert on the way home.

Why I Write These Stories
People sometimes ask why I spend so much time writing about Williamsburg — concerts, restaurants, neighborhoods, and community events — when I could just sell houses.
Here’s the truth: I don’t just sell real estate. I help people fall in love with a place.
Whether you’ve lived in Williamsburg for decades or you’re considering a move here, stories like this matter. They show what life here actually feels like — the music, the walkable evenings, the sense of community. That’s the stuff you can’t see on a spreadsheet or an MLS listing.
And frankly, I love telling those stories.
