New Kent’s Grayson Torrence Earns a Golden Ticket to Hollywood on “American Idol”
If you know me, you know I’m a huge music fan. I’ve been watching American Idol for 20 years, and I love seeing local talent shine on the big stage. That’s why I was especially excited to see New Kent County’s Grayson Torrence earn a golden ticket to Hollywood on Sunday night’s episode!

Grayson, a 21-year-old gymnastics instructor who’s been singing professionally since her teens, auditioned for the show in Nashville last fall. She performed Christina Aguilera’s “Fall in Line” featuring Demi Lovato before judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood, and she absolutely blew them away.
“That was my favorite audition of the day,” Bryan said, giving her a standing ovation. Underwood told her she had “a great voice, for sure,” and Richie added, “You can actually go some place in this competition.” Moments later, Grayson was holding her golden ticket and securing her spot in Hollywood!
After the episode aired, she shared her excitement on Facebook:
“Holy Moly! I just got THE GOLDEN TICKET TO HOLLYWOOD! I feel so unbelievably blessed for this opportunity and so, so happy! Thank you Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie for believing in me! Such an honor!”
The New Kent community is rallying behind her, including the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office, where her father and sister serve as deputies.
Grayson has been performing since she was 9 years old and has already released four singles. This was actually her second attempt at American Idol—she first auditioned in 2018 but didn’t make the cut. Now, she’s back stronger than ever and proving she belongs on the big stage!
