An Occasion for the Arts Returns to Williamsburg October 2–4, 2026

Every community has a story—and for nearly six decades, An Occasion for the Arts has helped tell Williamsburg’s story through art, music, creativity, and community.

One of Williamsburg’s most beloved fall traditions returns October 2–4, 2026, when downtown Williamsburg comes alive for the 58th annual An Occasion for the Arts.

The main festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, October 3–4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the celebration begins Friday evening with a free kickoff concert in Merchants Square.

This year’s festival will be bigger and broader than ever, featuring:

  • More than 150 juried artists from across the country
  • 50 local artists
  • More than 300 Williamsburg-James City County student artists
  • Live music and performances throughout the weekend
  • 12 arts educators conducting on-site workshops
  • Food and beverage vendors
  • Hands-on activities for children and families
  • Five distinct festival zones throughout downtown Williamsburg

Half of this year’s participating artists are new to the show, while 60% of the performing artists will be making their festival debuts.

Liz Moore & Associates is proud to serve as the festival’s presenting sponsor, helping support a weekend that brings artists, musicians, educators, students, residents, and visitors together in the heart of Williamsburg.

A Williamsburg Tradition Since 1969

Founded in 1969, An Occasion for the Arts began as a local celebration of creativity. Over the years, it has grown into one of the region’s leading art and music festivals—and Williamsburg’s only annual outdoor fine arts festival.

For one fall weekend, the streets and public spaces surrounding Merchants Square become an enormous outdoor gallery filled with painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, glass, woodwork, fiber art, printmaking, metalwork, drawing, digital art, and mixed media.

But the festival’s longevity is not simply the result of its size. It has endured because it continues to connect people.

Artists meet the people who buy and appreciate their work. Young students display their creations alongside established professionals. Musicians and dancers perform for new audiences. Local businesses welcome visitors into downtown Williamsburg. Friends and neighbors run into one another while walking from exhibit to exhibit.

It is the kind of experience that reminds us why Williamsburg is such a special community.

More Than 200 Artists in Downtown Williamsburg

The visual arts remain at the center of An Occasion for the Arts.

The 2026 festival will feature more than 150 juried artists from around the nation, along with 50 local artists representing Williamsburg’s own creative community. Together, they will transform the festival grounds into one of the region’s largest and most diverse displays of original art.

Approximately 50% of the participating artists are new to the festival this year. That balance between returning Legacy Artists and first-time participants gives longtime visitors an opportunity to reconnect with familiar favorites while discovering an entirely new collection of work.

Visitors will be able to speak directly with the artists, learn about their inspiration and techniques, and purchase original pieces. Artwork will span a wide range of media, including:

  • Painting
  • Photography
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture
  • Wood
  • Ceramics
  • Glass
  • Jewelry
  • Metalwork
  • Drawing and pastels
  • Decorative and functional fiber art
  • Mixed-media and digital art

Whether you are an established collector, searching for something distinctive for your home, or simply enjoy seeing what talented artists can create, there will be an extraordinary amount to explore.

The Weekend Begins Friday Night

The celebration starts with the An Occasion for the Arts Kickoff Party on Friday, October 2, at 6 p.m. in Merchants Square.

The kickoff is being presented in collaboration with the Virginia Arts Festival and will feature a free public concert by Pressing Strings, an Annapolis-based band whose music combines indie folk, soul, and rock.

Pressing Strings has earned national attention for its powerful vocals, thoughtful songwriting, and genre-crossing live performances. Food and beverages will also be available in the Block Party area.

The partnership with the Virginia Arts Festival adds another important regional arts organization to the weekend and helps create a lively opening-night experience before the artist booths open Saturday morning.

Five Festival Zones to Explore

The 2026 festival will be organized into five principal zones across Duke of Gloucester Street, North Boundary Street, Prince George Street, Merchants Square, Wren Garden, and the P3 parking area.

Each zone will offer a different experience, ranging from nationally juried art and local artists to student exhibitions, workshops, live performances, food, and opportunities to meet the people supporting the festival.

Main Street Artists

The Main Street Artists area is the center of the National Juried Artists Exhibition.

More than 150 professional artists from across the country will display and sell original work along Duke of Gloucester Street and North Boundary Street.

These artists have been selected through a competitive jury process covering both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work. Visitors can speak directly with the artists, ask questions about their creative processes, and purchase pieces ranging from functional pottery and wearable jewelry to paintings, photographs, woodwork, and major sculptures.

With half of the participating artists new to the show in 2026, even those who attend every year will find an extensive selection of work they have never seen before.

Front Porch

Located in Merchants Square, the Front Porch will showcase 50 local artists who call the Williamsburg area home.

National artists may attract visitors from throughout the region, but local artists form the foundation of Williamsburg’s year-round creative community. The Front Porch provides an opportunity to meet them, see what they are producing, and purchase art created right here in our community.

Visitors may discover work inspired by familiar local landscapes, architecture, history, people, and experiences. Supporting these artists helps strengthen the creative community that exists in Williamsburg long after the festival tents have come down.

AVANTgarden

Wren Garden will become AVANTgarden, a youth-centered student and community zone designed to encourage the next generation of artists.

The 2026 student exhibition will showcase artwork created by more than 300 Williamsburg-James City County students. Seeing their work displayed as part of a major public festival gives these young artists an opportunity to share their ideas with thousands of residents and visitors.

The AVANTgarden will also have 12 arts educators on-site conducting art workshops throughout the weekend. Children and families will be able to participate in hands-on creative experiences, experiment with different materials, and learn directly from working educators.

The Muscarelle Museum of Art is collaborating with An Occasion for the Arts on the AVANTgarden student zone, adding the resources and educational experience of one of Williamsburg’s leading cultural institutions.

Activities will include:

  • An exhibition featuring more than 300 WJCC student artists
  • Workshops led by 12 arts educators
  • Hands-on creative experiences
  • The interactive Art Lab
  • Muscarelle Museum of Art activities
  • Youth and community performances

This is one of the festival’s most meaningful components. It does more than give young people something to do while their parents explore the art booths. It gives students a genuine place within Williamsburg’s larger cultural community and allows them to see their own work presented alongside established professionals.

Patron’s Patio

The Patron’s Patio, located at the DOG Street Bistro patio, will serve as a hospitality area for festival sponsors and donors.

The dedicated lounge will offer live music, complimentary refreshments, and opportunities for supporters to meet artists and connect with one another.

An Occasion for the Arts remains free to the public through the support of volunteers, businesses, sponsors, donors, educators, and community partners. The Patron’s Patio recognizes the people and organizations helping sustain the event.

Block Party

The P3 parking lot will become the Block Party, featuring the festival’s main performance stage, regional musicians, food and beverage vendors, and sponsor exhibits.

The 2026 entertainment lineup places a renewed emphasis on discovery, with 60% of the performing artists appearing at An Occasion for the Arts for the first time.

Performances will span folk, funk, rock, Motown, jazz, Celtic music, traditional Virginia mountain music, world percussion, dance, theater, and more.

Supporting Artists Across Generations

One of the most valuable aspects of An Occasion for the Arts is its commitment to supporting artistic practice at every stage.

More than 150 juried artists will have a significant regional platform from which to present and sell their work. Fifty local artists will gain additional exposure within their own community. More than 300 WJCC students will experience the excitement of seeing their artwork displayed publicly, while 12 arts educators will help children and families explore their own creativity.

The collaboration with the Muscarelle Museum of Art strengthens the festival’s educational offerings, while the partnership with the Virginia Arts Festival expands its connection to the region’s performing arts community.

Together, these elements make An Occasion for the Arts much more than a marketplace. It is also an exhibition, classroom, performance venue, cultural exchange, and celebration of imagination.

When someone purchases an original painting, photograph, piece of pottery, necklace, sculpture, or handmade object, that person is doing more than taking home something beautiful. The purchase directly supports the artist who created it.

A Setting That Is Unmistakably Williamsburg

Few outdoor arts festivals can match this setting.

The festival stretches through the pedestrian-friendly streets surrounding Merchants Square, near the College of William & Mary and Colonial Williamsburg. Historic buildings, brick sidewalks, gardens, mature trees, shops, and restaurants create a backdrop that is distinctly Williamsburg.

The festival grounds are compact enough to explore on foot but large enough for each area to offer a different experience.

Visitors can move from nationally juried art along Duke of Gloucester Street to local artists in Merchants Square, student programs in Wren Garden, and live music and food in the Block Party area.

It creates an easy rhythm for the day: browse the artwork, listen to a performance, stop for lunch, participate in an activity, and then return to an artist whose work caught your attention earlier.

Connecting Williamsburg’s Past and Present

An Occasion for the Arts is also a commemorative partner of VA250, Virginia’s American Revolution 250 Commission.

That designation is particularly appropriate in Williamsburg, a city closely connected to the nation’s founding but also home to a vibrant contemporary community.

The festival demonstrates that Williamsburg is not frozen in the past. History remains central to our identity, but today’s artists, students, musicians, educators, business owners, and residents continue to shape the community and add new chapters to its story.

A Williamsburg Tradition Worth Supporting

An Occasion for the Arts is organized by a nonprofit organization and made possible by volunteers, donors, sponsors, local businesses, educators, arts organizations, and community partners.

Keeping a festival of this size free and accessible requires a tremendous community effort. Those interested in helping can volunteer, become a Friend of the Arts, make a donation, or explore sponsorship opportunities through the festival website.

I’m proud that Liz Moore & Associates is the presenting sponsor for 2026, helping support an event that benefits our artists, young people, downtown businesses, tourism economy, and overall quality of life.

Why Events Like This Matter

People often begin their search for a new home by comparing prices, floor plans, neighborhoods, schools, taxes, and commuting distances. Those are all important considerations.

Eventually, however, most people are searching for something less tangible: a place where they feel connected.

Community traditions provide that connection. They give us opportunities to see neighbors, meet new people, support local organizations, expose children to new experiences, and feel part of something larger.

An Occasion for the Arts is a wonderful example of why Williamsburg is more than a destination. It is a genuine community—and a remarkable place to call home.
