Opinion: How the Greater Williamsburg Sports Complex Will Transform Tourism

The announcement that Phenom Hoops will bring seven high-profile basketball tournaments to the Greater Williamsburg Sports Complex in 2027 marks a significant milestone for our area. While the Sports Complex has sparked its share of controversy, I see this as an incredible opportunity to enhance Williamsburg’s tourism appeal and bolster the local economy in ways we haven’t seen before.

Phenom Hoops, a nationally recognized leader in high school basketball showcases and tournaments, chose Williamsburg for good reason. As their President, Rick Lewis, noted, Williamsburg offers the “total package”—a state-of-the-art 12-court facility, more than 7,000 hotel rooms, outstanding restaurants, and iconic attractions like Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg. Pair that with our region’s rich history, and it’s no wonder Williamsburg stood out as an ideal location.

But the impact goes far beyond basketball. These tournaments will attract athletes, families, and fans from across the country, who will stay here for multiple days, dine in our restaurants, shop at our stores, and explore our local attractions. This isn’t just about filling a sports complex; it’s about bringing new energy and vibrancy to our community.

Phenom Hoops’ events will bring families who might not otherwise visit Williamsburg, introducing them to everything our area has to offer. While their primary focus may be basketball, these families will leave with memories of our historic sites, unique dining options, and world-class hospitality. And when they spend money here, they’ll help sustain local businesses, create jobs, and support our economy in meaningful ways.

Yes, projects like the Sports Complex come with challenges, but it’s time we focus on the immense potential. Phenom Hoops’ partnership underscores Williamsburg’s growing reputation as a sports tourism destination. Beyond the games, these tournaments will help establish Williamsburg as a vibrant hub for connection, growth, and opportunity.

As we look to the future, it’s exciting to imagine how this initiative could pave the way for more events like this. Williamsburg has always been known for its history; now, we’re carving out a new legacy as a place where the past meets the future—and where sports tourism helps us thrive.

Let’s embrace this opportunity and welcome Phenom Hoops with open arms. This is more than basketball; it’s an investment in our community’s future.
