Precarious Beer Hall opening in the ‘burg

There is nothing “precarious” about the surge of amazing restaurants and breweries coming to Williamsburg. In fact, thanks to brewer/ restauranteurs Andrew Voss and Chris Cook, foodies and beer lovers will have another new place to check out this summer.

The Precarious Beer Hall, an offshoot of nearby gastropub Amber Ox Public House – also owned by Andrew and Chris – is set to open June 8 in the city’s Merchant Square area.

The venue is like no other in Williamsburg – and that’s by design.

Quoted recently in the local newspaper, Andrew said: “It’s all completely and totally different. It’s all communal-style seating, and we’ve got a little bit of that at Amber Ox, but it’s going to be a totally different vibe.”

Precarious Beer started out as the brewery portion of Amber Ox – taking up only 700 square feet. Both Andrew and Chris wanted to grow that side of the business and before long came up with the idea to create a new nightspot in Williamsburg – thus, the Precarious Beer Project was born. The new beer hall will now accommodate a 10-barrel production area as well as house a southern California-inspired street taco eatery called Electric Circus.

Greg Fleehart, Head Brewer of the Precarious Beer Project at Amber Ox, will also oversee the new brewery location.

If serving delicious tacos and beer wasn’t enough, Precarious Beer Project also offers an arcade area with pinball machines and vintage games like Pac Man.

And what beer hall wouldn’t be complete with live music? The 9,700-square-foot brewery and restaurant will feature an outdoor patio and indoor stage perfect for attracting popular regional and national acts.

Precarious Beer is working with Richmond’s Broadberry Entertainment Group to book performers for the space and already have bands booked through October.

“Our hope is that we can do more intimate sets,” said Andrew in a recent interview with the Virginia Gazette. “We’re not a concert hall, but we will have a fairly robust entertainment and music program here.”

Some of the upcoming bands performing at Precarious include: Bennett Wales & The Relief, People’s Blues Of Richmond, Suggesting Rhythm, Full Moon Fever: A Tom Petty Tribute Band, Erin and The Wildfire, Kyle Daniel, Blue Tips, The Bob Band, C2 & The Brothers Reed, Copper Chief, The Orange Constant, Pierce Edens, Kendall Street Company, The Fritz, Stop Light Observations, Songs From The Road Band, Melodime & Coral Creek.

Want to go? Precarious Beer will tentatively open June 8 and is located in the former Season’s Restaurant and Stefano’s Pizza in the Henry Street Shops at Merchants Square adjacent to Mellow Mushroom. It will celebrate its grand opening June 15 with live music from Richmond-based ensemble No BS! Brass Band.
