Virginia Winter Survival Guide: The Williamsburg Edition

Hold onto your tri-corner hats, folks, because Virginia Winter is upon us, and it’s about to get real… or not. Here’s what you need to know as we head into this magical season of “maybe-snow-but-probably-just-rain” in our beloved Commonwealth.

The Threat Level: Snowmageddon (Sort of)

If you’re new to Virginia—or Williamsburg specifically—let me welcome you to the most dramatic 7 days of the year. At some point, the local news will unleash a Snowpocalypse Advisory. Will it snow? Maybe. Will it ice? Possibly. Will we collectively lose our minds at the mere mention of snow? Absolutely.

If the forecast calls for 2 inches, prepare for anywhere between 1/2 an inch and 12 feet. Accuracy is for other states.

Your Mission: Milk, Bread, and Chaos

When the snow threat looms, Virginians have one sacred tradition: raiding the grocery store. You don’t need milk, eggs, or bread? Doesn’t matter. You’re buying them anyway. It’s the law. Bonus points if you argue with someone over the last loaf of Wonder Bread while making awkward eye contact with your neighbor.

Need faucet covers? Good luck. You’ve now entered the Hunger Games. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Sledding? Forget it. Sleds sold out last winter. Grab a trash can lid, cardboard box, or your kid’s plastic storage bin and head for the nearest hill (or slight incline, if that’s all we’ve got). It’s called improvisation, and here in Williamsburg, we’re masters of it.

The Roads: A Winter Wonderland of Chaos

We don’t have the equipment to handle snow. Or ice. Or sometimes even rain. The plows will try, bless their hearts, but don’t expect miracles. And let’s not sugarcoat it: no one here can drive in winter weather. Not even the person honking at you like they’re a seasoned pro.

Stay home if you can. If you can’t, just accept that your commute will involve some sliding, swerving, and maybe a little praying.

Oh, and whatever you do, don’t mention snow tires. We don’t want to hear about how they “do it back home.” You live in Virginia now.

Winter Warriors to the Rescue

If you end up stuck in a ditch (and you might), don’t worry. Two guys in a pickup truck will show up faster than you can say “Colonial Parkway.” These local heroes thrive on winter chaos and will gleefully pull you out. When they offer you a beer and some deer jerky, take it. It’s the polite thing to do.

Pro tip: If one of them yells, “Hey y’all, watch this!” step back and start recording. You might just go viral.

Second Winter: The Sneaky Sequel

Just when you think it’s safe to break out the flip-flops and plant your flowers, Second Winter will strike. It usually hits right around Easter, plunging us back into freezing temperatures just long enough to kill your prematurely planted begonias.

This is why the locals don’t plant before Easter. If you see someone browsing the nursery in March, chances are they’re new. Bless their optimistic hearts.

Spring? Blink and You’ll Miss It

Once Second Winter ends, Williamsburg will tease you with a few glorious weeks of spring. Then, out of nowhere, Summer will show up like an uninvited guest, complete with face-melting humidity that doesn’t let up until Halloween.

So there you have it: your guide to surviving the quirks of Virginia winter. Embrace the madness, stock up on bread, and remember—you’ll be back in shorts before you know it. And if not? At least we have the wine. Cheers!
