Why the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at William & Mary Is One More Reason People Move to Williamsburg
If there’s one thing my clients tell me again and again—especially those who are retired or moving here for that next chapter—it’s this:
“We didn’t just move here for the weather… we moved here for the people, the culture — and yes, the learning!”
And nowhere does that sentiment ring truer than with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at William & Mary—a community gem for active adults around Williamsburg and beyond.

What Is the Osher Institute?
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at William & Mary is a non-credit continuing education program specially designed for adults 50 and better who want to learn, engage, and connect just for the fun of it. There are no tests, no grades, no stress—just pure curiosity and connection. (William & Mary School of Education)
It started back in 1991 as the Christopher Wren Association and became an official Osher Institute in 2018, joining a nationwide network of lifelong learning institutes supported in part by the Bernard Osher Foundation. (William & Mary School of Education)
A Curriculum As Broad As Your Interests
One of the most impressive things about Osher at William & Mary is just how diverse and engaging the course offerings are. While the exact Spring 2026 catalog is still being finalized, past and current catalogs feature well over 60+ classes per semester, covering subjects as varied as:
📘 History & Culture
- Virginia and American history
- Art history and appreciation
- World civilizations and cultural movements
🧠 Technology & Modern Skills
- Intro to ChatGPT and generative AI tools
- Digital photography and online skills
🎨 Arts & Humanities
- Creative writing
- Music appreciation
- Literature and poetry
🌍 Science & Nature
- Environmental topics
- Basic science explorations
💡 Special Interest & Personal Growth
- Philosophy and critical thinking

…and so much more. Classes are often led by expert instructors who are faculty, retirees, community members, and sometimes even fellow Osher members with deep expertise to share. (William & Mary School of Education)

Not Just Courses—It’s a Community
This isn’t a place where you just sit in a room and listen (although that can be fun too!). It’s about connection.
Members often describe Osher as:
- A place to try new things
- A place to reconnect with passions
- A place to make new friends
Many classes include discussion and interactive elements that let people share experiences and insights—something that’s much richer than a traditional classroom. (William & Mary School of Education)
Social connection is a huge part of the Osher experience. Breaks between sessions often turn into impromptu chats over coffee, and members often stay after class just to talk about what they learned (or what the instructor didn’t quite get to!). (Mr. Williamsburg)
Who Can Join and How Registration Works
Membership in Osher is required to register for classes, but once you’re a member, you get access to all kinds of learning opportunities each semester. (William & Mary School of Education)
Here’s how it works:
🛠️ Becoming a Member
- You purchase an Osher membership (often for the semester).
- Membership opens access to registration and member benefits.
📅 Registration Timeline
- Early registration gives access to the most popular classes and runs for a limited time before general enrollment.
- Regular enrollment opens later, and seats are filled first-come, first-served. (campusce.net)
📍 Class Formats
- In-person classes (often on or near the W&M campus)
- Lectures and events
- Some institutes around the country even offer online or hybrid options—so you can learn from home. (osher.wustl.edu)
A Unique Advantage of Living in Williamsburg
Here’s the thing: not every community has something like Osher. Sure, plenty of places have parks and restaurants. But a vibrant lifelong learning community connected to a world-class university? That’s special.
I’ve had so many clients move here because:
- They loved the idea of staying mentally active after retirement
- They wanted to meet people with similar interests
- They were excited to learn about topics they never had time for before
And the Osher Institute consistently delivers in all those areas. (Mr. Williamsburg)
Why I Write These Articles
I write these posts not because I have to, but because I’ve seen firsthand how much a community resource like the Osher Institute can enhance someone’s quality of life.
When people choose their next home, they aren’t just choosing a house. They’re choosing a lifestyle—a community of neighbors, of friends, of experiences that keep life vibrant, meaningful, and rich with possibility.
And if lifelong learning matters to you? You won’t find something quite like this everywhere.
