🚧 Colonial Parkway Construction Update – May 2026 🚧

After years of closures, detours, orange barrels, and frustration from both locals and tourists, there is finally some visible progress happening along the Colonial Parkway.

The National Park Service announced this week that the section of the Parkway between Parkway Drive and Newport Avenue in Williamsburg — including the Williamsburg Tunnel — officially reopened on May 15.

Crews have reportedly made “substantial progress” across the overall Colonial Parkway Rehabilitation Project, which remains one of the largest infrastructure restoration projects ever undertaken within Colonial National Historical Park.

Still, if we’re being honest, this project has taken far longer than many anticipated, and it’s unfortunate that so many residents and visitors have missed the opportunity to experience one of the most scenic and historic drives in Virginia during these extended closures.

For many tourists visiting Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, the Colonial Parkway isn’t simply a road — it’s part of the attraction itself. The drive along the water, through the forests, across the bridges, and between the historic areas has always been part of the magic of visiting the Historic Triangle. Countless visitors over the past several years likely skipped it entirely because sections were closed, confusing, or difficult to navigate.

According to the latest construction update, the overall project remains on track for completion by late fall 2026.

Here’s the latest breakdown by segment:

🔹 Segment A (Ballard Street to Fusiliers Redoubt Ramp)
Crews have completed installation of all new pavement panels. Current work includes shoulder grading and stabilization, installation of new timber guardrails, roadway signage, and continued restoration work on the Yorktown Creek Bridge parapet walls, including brick facing repairs.

🔹 Segments D & E (Felgates Creek to Penniman Road)
This area is now largely in punch-list mode, with crews focusing on cleanup and shoulder stabilization work.

🔹 Segment F (Penniman Road to Parkway Drive)
Subgrade stabilization work is nearing completion, which officials say will mark the completion of stabilization work across the entire project. Concrete paving operations continue between Hubbard Lane and Parkway Drive.

🔹 Segment G1 (Newport Avenue to Route 199)
Crews continue pouring and constructing new concrete pavement panels.

🔹 Segment G2 (Parkway Drive to Newport Avenue)
This section — including the Williamsburg Tunnel — is now fully complete and reopened to traffic.

Additional restoration projects are also continuing throughout the corridor:

🔸 Jones Mill Pond Dam
Crews are nearly finished with grading, stabilization, drainage improvements, spillway repairs, and brick masonry restoration around the dam structure.

🔸 Bridge Projects
Work on the Indian Field Creek Bridge and North Pier Access Bridge is complete. Construction on the Mine Depot Road Bridge is expected to resume in July.

One particularly interesting note:
From June 10 through July 6, portions of the Parkway between Ballard Street and Penniman Road will temporarily reopen to accommodate the massive crowds expected for this summer’s America 250 events, including:
🇺🇸 Sail Yorktown Festival (June 12–14)
🇺🇸 July 4th celebrations throughout the Historic Triangle

After the events conclude, those sections will close again so construction can continue toward the late 2026 completion target.

About Me & Why I Write These Articles

For those who may not know me, I’m John Womeldorf — also known as Mr. Williamsburg. I’ve been listing and selling homes throughout Williamsburg, Hampton Roads, Richmond, and surrounding areas for more than 20 years, but I’ve always considered myself a local ambassador first and a Realtor second.

My wife and I raised our family here, and over the years I’ve spent countless hours driving the Colonial Parkway — whether heading to Yorktown, cycling nearby trails, showing homes to relocating buyers, or simply enjoying one of the most scenic drives in Virginia.

I write these articles because I genuinely care about this community and enjoy helping both locals and future residents stay informed about the events, developments, neighborhoods, businesses, and changes shaping our region. Quite often, people relocating here tell me these posts helped them understand what life in Williamsburg is really like before they ever arrived — and that means a lot to me.

If you’re considering buying or selling anywhere in Williamsburg, York County, New Kent, Richmond, Virginia Beach, or surrounding areas, I’m always happy to help.
