Port Anne Williamsburg – A Hidden Gem Along College Creek
By John Womeldorf, A.K.A. Mr. Williamsburg
If you’re searching for one of Williamsburg’s most quietly elegant neighborhoods — the kind longtime locals love and newcomers often discover by accident — let me introduce you to Port Anne.
Tucked along College Creek and just steps from Colonial Williamsburg, Port Anne offers a rare combination of walkability, waterfront access, history, and an intimate, neighborly feel. It’s one of those communities where people genuinely know each other… but still respect your privacy. (A perfect balance, if you ask me.)
With rolling hills, mature trees, custom‑built homes, and a clubhouse that feels more like a private social club than an HOA amenity, Port Anne remains one of Williamsburg’s most desirable — and pleasantly under‑the‑radar — neighborhoods.

Location, Location… and Then Some
Port Anne sits in the very heart of Williamsburg, within easy walking distance to:
- Colonial Williamsburg (yes, your Good Neighbor Card will get plenty of use)
- Merchants Square shops and restaurants
- Duke of Gloucester Street Farmer’s Market
- Golden Horseshoe Golf Course
- Matoaka Amphitheater summer concerts
- PBK Hall performing arts series
- College Landing Park (kayaks, canoes, boardwalks, and marsh views)
- Williamsburg Regional Library and Swem Library
- Matthew Whaley Elementary School
It’s rare to find a neighborhood where you can walk to golf, history, dining, concerts, and waterfront — and still return home to a quiet, residential setting.
Community Amenities
Port Anne’s amenities are centered around its beautiful Clubhouse, which serves as both a social hub and a gathering place for residents.
At the Clubhouse you’ll find:
- Swimming Pool
- Tennis Court
- Exercise Room / Fitness Center
- Lounge & Bar Area
- Sunroom
- Meeting & Event Space
One of Port Anne’s most charming and practical features is something you rarely see in Williamsburg neighborhoods — four guest rooms inside the clubhouse, available for residents to rent when friends or family visit.
Each guest room includes:
- Ensuite bath
- Television
- Wi‑Fi
It’s a wonderful solution: your guests stay close, but not underfoot… and you don’t have to buy a home with guest rooms you’ll only use a few times a year.
Reservations and availability are handled through the Port Anne Property Manager.

Social Life & Community Feel
Port Anne is well known for its welcoming and active social scene.
An energetic social committee hosts events throughout the year, including:
- Fourth of July parades
- Kentucky Derby parties
- Holiday dinners
- Seasonal neighborhood gatherings
One longtime resident once told me:
“We’re not nosy, but we do have a caring relationship.”
That pretty much captures it. This is a neighborhood where people wave, know your name, and genuinely look out for one another — without ever crossing into your business.

A Neighborhood with Deep Roots
Long before Port Anne became a residential neighborhood, this land played an important role in early Virginia history.
In 1699, Governor Francis Nicholson designated College Creek as Princess Anne Port, a key shipping point for tobacco and military supplies. That historic port is now College Landing Park, located directly beside the neighborhood.
Before the first homes were built, developer Gerald Divaris allowed archaeologists to survey the property. The findings were remarkable — artifacts from the 17th and 18th centuries, and portions of the site dating back as far as 1,000 A.D.
Many of these artifacts are now displayed inside the clubhouse — a quiet reminder that you’re living on truly historic ground.
