Colonial Williamsburg Launches “The Flame of Revolution” Tonight — A New Immersive America 250 Experience

WILLIAMSBURG, VA — Colonial Williamsburg is launching what may become one of the signature events of the America 250 commemoration this weekend with the debut of “The Flame of Revolution: 5th Virginia Convention” — a large-scale immersive outdoor theatrical experience taking place tonight and tomorrow night in the Historic Area.

The free public event will be held:

📍 Capitol Building – Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area
📅 Friday, May 15 & Saturday, May 16, 2026
⏰ 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM
💰 Free & Open to the Public

Unlike a traditional historical reenactment or stage production, this event blends live actors, storytelling, lighting, music, and digital projection technology to recreate the dramatic atmosphere surrounding the Fifth Virginia Convention of May 1776 — the pivotal gathering where Virginia’s leaders voted to push for independence from Great Britain.

That historic vote, which happened right here in Williamsburg, directly influenced the Continental Congress and helped pave the way for the signing of the Declaration of Independence just weeks later.

According to Colonial Williamsburg, the production is designed to fully immerse visitors in the emotion, tension, and energy of the revolutionary moment. The streets surrounding the Capitol will effectively become part of the stage as the audience experiences the debates and momentum that helped shape a new nation.

The production was written and directed by Nation Builders performers Katharine Pittman (Martha Washington) and Kurt Smith (Thomas Jefferson).

Visitors can expect:

  • Live historical interpretations
  • Multimedia projection effects
  • Revolutionary-era storytelling
  • Music and immersive street-level action
  • A highly interactive atmosphere

One important note for attendees: because of the immersive format, chairs are not permitted in the middle of the street and guests should be prepared to stand for the duration of the performance. Snacks and drinks will be available near Shield’s Tavern before the event begins.

As someone who attends a lot of local events throughout the year, this feels like a pretty major step forward in how Williamsburg is interpreting history and engaging audiences for the America 250 celebration. It sounds much more theatrical and experiential than many traditional Colonial Williamsburg programs.

I plan on being there tonight myself and will share photos and updates afterward.

If you attend, I’d love to hear what you thought of it.
