Nearly 50 years after one of the most memorable concerts in Williamsburg history, the music of the Grateful Dead is returning to William & Mary.

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, Dark Star Orchestra, widely regarded as one of the premier Grateful Dead tribute bands in the world, will perform a special four-hour concert at the Martha Wren Briggs Amphitheatre at Lake Matoaka. The performance commemorates the legendary Grateful Dead concert held at William & Mary Hall in September 1976, a show that many fans still consider one of the band’s finest.

Tickets are available through William & Mary’s official ticketing website:

Judging by the tremendous interest this announcement has already generated, I wouldn’t be surprised if this show sells out quickly. If you’re thinking about attending, I’d recommend getting your tickets sooner rather than later.

A Piece of Williamsburg Music History

Many people don’t realize that the Grateful Dead performed four legendary concerts at William & Mary during the 1970s. Those performances have become part of the band’s rich history, with the 1976 and 1978 Williamsburg concerts later released as part of the Grateful Dead’s acclaimed Dave’s Picks archival series.

According to Susan Corbett’s article, the idea for bringing Dark Star Orchestra to Williamsburg came from Brent Zeller (’76), who attended the original 1976 concert shortly after graduating from William & Mary. After spending decades following both the Grateful Dead and Dark Star Orchestra, he worked with the university over the past two years to make this anniversary performance a reality.

As Zeller put it, “If you never got to see Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, this is as close as you’re ever going to get.”

About Dark Star Orchestra

Since forming in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra has performed more than 3,300 concerts, faithfully recreating the Grateful Dead concert experience. Rather than simply playing the band’s greatest hits, they perform complete Grateful Dead-style shows while capturing the improvisation and energy that made every original performance unique.

For longtime Deadheads and newer fans alike, it’s widely considered the closest experience to seeing the Grateful Dead live.

A Great Night for Williamsburg

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge fan of live music, so I’m especially excited to see this event coming to Williamsburg.

I’m also happy to see the William & Mary amphitheater being used. In my opinion, it’s one of the area’s most beautiful—and unfortunately one of its most underutilized—outdoor venues. Nestled beside Lake Matoaka, it’s a spectacular setting for concerts, and I’d love to see William & Mary host even more performances there in the future.

Williamsburg has a wonderful music community, and events like this only make our area an even better place to live, visit, and enjoy.

If you’re a Grateful Dead fan—or simply appreciate great live music under the stars—this is shaping up to be one of the can’t-miss concerts of the year.
