Jamestown High School
Jamestown High School offers a comprehensive curriculum in all disciplines to meet the needs of a diverse population. Advanced courses are provided in most subject areas. The school uses a hybrid 4×4 semester block schedule with year-long courses embedded as A/B alternating days. Students can earn up to four units of credit per semester.
Students in advanced mathematics may begin with algebra in middle school and end with AP Calculus or AP Statistics in high school. Interdisciplinary courses in American Studies meet requirements for credits in American History and American Literature. At least five credits in French, Spanish, Latin, and German as well as three units of American Sign Language are available to students. The fine arts, including music, art, speech, and drama, are an integral part of the curriculum.
Advanced Placement courses are offered in English, Human Geography, United States History, United States Government, Comparative Government, Microeconomics, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Spanish, Latin, French, German, Music Theory, and Studio Art. Advanced level Theater and literary arts courses are offered. Advanced courses in Biology/Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, and Environmental Sciences with appropriate mentorships are available through the New Horizons Governor’s School for Science & Technology in Hampton.
Students may enroll in concurrent courses at The College of William and Mary, Christopher Newport University, and Thomas Nelson Community College. Dual enrollment credit is offered for many technical and academic classes. Students may enroll in a Constitutional Law class in partnership with The College of William & Mary Law School. The Department of Applied Science at W&M offers a summer and academic year internship in Neuroscience to one senior from each high school.
The Health and Physical Education Department offers the two-credit sequence required by the state, as well as electives. The Technology Education Department offers three Career and Technical Education exploration courses and a three-credit sequence in technical and computer-based drawing. Career and Technical Education courses include Marketing and Cooperative Business Education. Some technical courses lead to industry certification. Licensed Practical Nursing is available at Lafayette High School. Participation in the New Horizons Regional Education Center and York County School of the Arts enhances the opportunities for challenging and diverse experiences for Jamestown students. Warhill High School opened in September 2007 with grades 9 – 11. The first graduates were the Class of 2009.
