Walter and Carol Jones liked their Suffolk home of six years but felt they needed something different. Another couple, Garland and Suzanne Brown, were tired of the outdoor maintenance required by their house in Smithfield. Both couples learned of Church Square, an active-adult community for those 55 and older in historic Smithfield, and determined it was the place for them.

“We had a three-story condominium and decided at our age that we didn’t need to climb three stories anymore,” Walter Jones, 79, said.

Added Suzanne Brown, 67, “We loved our place, but we had a great big yard with almost an acre of land. It got harder and harder to take care of the mowing, trimming and weeds.”

The Joneses, who have been married for 58 years, moved into Church Square in December 2007. “We have all of our amenities on the ground floor and a guest room upstairs,” Walter Jones said. The Browns are pleased that monthly association fees include all lawn maintenance. “Now we don’t have to worry about taking care of it anymore,” said Suzanne Brown, who planted pansies in her front garden area.

The Signature Club features a clubhouse with pool, exercise and dining rooms, kitchen, fireplace, game table, gathering room, gated entrance and outdoor patios.

“The ladies eat dessert there one day a month to discuss problems and make plans,” Suzanne Brown said.

“We’re all seniors, but we’re all in this together,” Walter Jones said. “We feel we have a jewel here.”
