Custom-Built Rural Retreat in Williamsburg For Sale

In 2002 Doug Lundberg bought a 2.79-acre plot of land on John Tyler Highway and decided to build his own custom dream home. The land, located across the street from Governor’s Land at Two Rivers, is conveniently located just a few miles from all of the conveniences Williamsburg has to offer (Target, Publix, dining, etc.) while still feeling like a private oasis just a few miles from the confluence of the James and Chickahominy Rivers.

Originally from Northern Pennsylvania, Doug moved to the Colonial Capital after coming down to attend a funeral of all things. “I was here for a week and heard construction going on and because I can never sit still, I decided to lend a hand,” he says. As a professional carpenter, Doug was intrigued when learned of building opportunities here in Williamsburg and decided to move down and get his Class A license and get to work. He acquired several contacts right off the bat, and immediately found himself with a ton of work just from word of mouth.

When it came to where he would settle down as a new resident in Williamsburg, Doug went out exploring and found a “For Sale” sign laying in the ditch at 2738 John Tyler Highway. He gave the realtor a call and decided to buy the land and build a home for himself.

Building the dream home

As a carpenter, Doug has several contacts and friends in the industry, so he got to work right away with a friend who dug him a basement. He knew he wanted a ranch floorplan with the master bedroom on the opposite side of the house from the kids’ rooms, to avoid hearing thumps and noise after a long day at work. He found a floorplan online, and has been thrilled with the finished result.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom ranch features a full basement with another bedroom and full bathroom. The ideal layout of the basement has allowed Doug to host live music events, and the freshly-finished media room is complete with sound panels and a kitchenette.  The basement is reinforced with 8-inch concrete walls, and the exterior walls of the home are all 2x6in, offering extra insulation.

Built in 2003, this home was designed before the popular trend of open floorplans, so Doug was ahead of his time when he chose this one. All of the bedrooms are large at 14×14 feet and the master bedroom is 16×15 feet.

The home boasts hardwood floors, carpet in the bedrooms and tile in the bathrooms. Coming from northern PA, Doug loved the warm feeling of wood trim, so there is wood trim throughout the home and all of the doors are solid wood.

Upon entering, you are greeted with ample natural light and lots of open space. The home also features a wood stove for cozy winter nights.

Expansive property in a prime location

The feature Doug is most proud of when it comes to his home is the outdoors. The home sits on nearly three acres of gorgeous, open land and woods. Doug even put in his own man-made pond on the property, complete with a gazebo, water feature and wooden swing.

Since moving in to the home in 2003, the Virginia Capital Trail was born in Williamsburg. The famous trail runs from Jamestown to Richmond and runs right in front of Doug’s property, so it’s easy for bike enthusiasts, runners, walkers, and everyone else to hop right on the trail and either head towards the rivers and Charles City, or towards Jamestown Settlement. Also located off of the Capital Trail and right down the street is Spoke & Art Provisions, a quaint coffee house, sandwich and gift shop just a short bike ride from Doug’s place.

Also located just down the street (or trail!) is Chickahominy Riverfront Park. The park features a swimming pool, splash pad, campground, fishing pier and boat launch, as well as regular events throughout the year.

For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle for the quiet country life while still having access to all Williamsburg has to offer, this home has it all. The property also features a garden, solar green house, and is perfect for chickens and other animals like horses to roam free. The property is zoned A1 so the possibilities are endless in terms of farming. “It’s really a homestead rather than just a house on a lot,” says Doug.

“The land the home is on is the biggest attraction of this property,” he says. “When my grandchildren come to stay, they are always running around and you can see the peace they feel when they are here. It’s a little slice of heaven.”

Doug says his expansive back porch is one of his favorite spots in the home and he even enjoys sleeping out there from time to time on his hammock. The back yard and porch are ideal for anyone who likes to entertain.

Doug admits it will be bittersweet to leave this incredible oasis that he has built, but he is longing to move back to the area he is from up north, where much of his family still lives. This home is a nature-lover’s paradise just waiting for someone new to come enjoy everything it has to offer.

Referring to himself as a perfectionist, Doug says it’s hard for him to not look around and think of ways to constantly improve and upgrade the home, which he has done through the years. But he says all-in-all it’s always been a very nice place to come home to, and he is thankful he’s gotten to call it home for many years.
