James City County asks for Public Comment- Brickyard Landing Acquisition

In a quest to provide more waterfront access and park space James City County Parks & Recreation is pursuing the acquisition of 119 acres of property on the Chickahominy River, located at 1006 Brickyard Road in upper James City County. Approximately 53 acres of the site are located in the Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area, and 45 acres are forested. The proposed site features include 3,415 linear feet of shoreline on the Chickahominy River, two existing picnic shelters, two restroom facilities and a 900-square-foot pier.

Currently, Parks & Recreation owns and operates 0.33 acres in the center of the site, known as Brickyard Landing, which includes an access road, boat ramp and a small space for parking approximately six vehicles. Use of the current site is limited due to lack of adequate parking and support features such as restroom facilities.

James City County Parks & Recreation’s goals for the proposed acquisition site are to enhance the current water access and support features for boating and fishing, preserve the property’s open space, natural resources and any cultural resources, and provide additional outdoor recreation opportunities to citizens. The acquisition need is identified in the James City County 2035 Comprehensive Plan, as well as the Parks & Recreation Master Plan under strategy PR 4.1 “Seek additional waterfront access on the James, York and Chickahominy rivers to improve and expand water access and blueway trail development…”

If acquired, potential recreation opportunities may include hiking and mountain biking trails, enhanced water access, paddlecraft activities, picnic area, natural areas, wildlife viewing, environmental education and outdoor recreation programming. Potential features on the site may include an improved boat ramp, additional parking and improved restroom and picnic shelter facilities.
