Kingsmill Resort sale to Escalante Golf is finalized
I first reported the imminent sale of the Kingsmill Resort on Dec 14, 2016. The sale has now been finalized as of March 1, 2017. Escalante Golf, a boutique owner and operator of unique golf assets has successfully acquired the AAA Four Diamond Kingsmill Resort from Xanterra Kingsmill, LLC.The purchase price was $30.7 million according to the James City County Clerk of the Circuit Court documents. Located in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, Kingsmill Resort adds another important east coast destination to the Escalante’s expanding family of high-end golf clubs.
Founded in 1991, Escalante Golf is a boutique owner and operator of luxury golf properties across nine states. The Fort Worth, Texas-based company has quietly assembled an impressive collection of exclusive clubs in key markets that have hosted several prestigious amateur and professional golf tournaments including the U.S. MidChampionship, the WinCo Foods Portland Open and the Shell Houston Open.
Operating partners David McDonald, Elcio Silva, Robert Silva and David Matheson direct the Escalante team.
Located in Williamsburg, Va., Kingsmill Resort includes 422 rooms; six restaurants; a 17,000-square-foot conference center; full-service spa and fitness center; marina; and 15-court tennis center. The resort is also widely known for its three award-winning championship golf courses and its executive nine-hole course.
The Kingsmill Resort and Kingsmill on the James community were developed by Anheuser-Busch along with the adjacent brewery and theme park in the 1970s. The resort is on a 2,900-acre tract, most of which was previously part of Kingsmill Plantation.
When Anheuser-Busch sold to Belgian brewer InBev in 2008, the new owners announced they would sell non-beverage industry assets. Xanterra acquired all of Kingsmill — the resort and development rights in the gated residential community where there remains land for development — for just under $24 million in 2010.
Here is the official announcement from Escalante Golf the new owners to Kingsmill members…
Dear Kingsmill Members:
As you may have heard, Escalante Golf successfully acquired all of the assets of Kingsmill Resort from Xanterra Kingsmill, LLC., including the Realty office and all remaining real estate. We are extremely honored and excited to be stewards of a property with such an iconic legacy created by Anheuser Busch more than 45 years ago.
We have a bold vision for the resort. While we will honor and preserve the history of Kingsmill Resort, our vision rests on a deeply-rooted conviction that the best days of the property are ahead. We believe Kingsmill Resort has the potential to become the most sought-after leisure destination on the eastern seaboard.
Our entire team from the home office will be spending quite a bit of time at Kingsmill Resort over the next few weeks meeting the team and getting to know the members and residents. We will be scheduling a series of town hall meetings in the coming weeks so that we can share our vision with you. We also want to come and listen, learn and understand your thoughts on the future of Kingsmill Resort. We have a deep appreciation for the importance of partnering with our members and residents to make sure you have a platform to help guide our decision making.
To those we have already met here at Kingsmill Resort, thank you for the incredibly warm welcome. To those we have not yet met, we look forward to getting to know you. Again, we are all incredibly excited to be here and look forward to a terrific future together.
Respectfully,
David McDonald
President
Escalante Golf, Inc.
