Freedom Park in James City County is home to significant American history – recognized nationally as the site of the earliest free black settlement dating to 1803-1860, an 18th-century graveyard, the Revolutionary War Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary in 1781 and a 17th century domicile that is revealing much archaeological research of the early colonial period (1680-1730)..
You can learn more about the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park during an interpretive talk this Saturday, Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. at the Park’s Interpretive Center, 5537 Centerville Rd, Williamsburg VA
Col Lafayette Jones Jr, a descendent of those who lived on the land during the 18th century, will offer a presentation on the 18th century life and freedom experienced by those who lived here more than 60 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. A book signing, “My Great, Great, Grandfather’s Journey,” will follow the presentation. The event is open to all ages.
