Discover one of Virginia’s premier golf course communities nestled among the rolling hills of the Virginia countryside in New Kent County, VA. Brickshire is centrally located less than 30 minutes from both Richmond and Williamsburg.Brickshire is a master-planned community with a championship golf course, world-class amenities, 1200 acres of rolling hills and woodlands and meticulously crafted new and resale homes.
New Kent County, Virginia is one of the oldest and most charming counties in the Commonwealth, with an English history dating back 400 years. New Kent’s roads, leading from Richmond to Williamsburg and Hampton Roads, are among the oldest in America. They have been traveled by not only the Colonial Patriots but the American, French and British Revolutionary and Confederate and Union Civil War armies as well as the U.S. troops for all subsequent wars.
Brickshire, in the heart of historic
Nine distinct neighborhoods make up the community along with a variety of amenities including over three miles of bike trails, community pool and clubhouse, an activities center with a gym, card room, and meeting room, tennis courts, ball field, and playground. The Association maintains these amenities along with each neighborhood entrance and the landscaping throughout the community. The Golf Club at Brickshire is owned and operated privately though residents benefit from the views afforded by the course layout and optional membership.
Residents enjoy a variety of activities in the neighborhood planned by the various committees and community groups. The Social Committee hosts member socials at the Owners’ Clubhouse, plans outings such as a riverboat cruise and dinner theater excursion, as well as an annual progressive dinner, Angel Tree and Food Drive, and more. The active Children’s Committee plans family friendly events for all ages including the Spring Frolic, Parent’s Night Out, Summer Carnival, and other fun activities. Other clubs and activities include the Art Group, Bunco, Ladies’ Mah Jong, Chess Club, Pickleball, Knitting and Needlework, Bridge and Euchre.
When David and Joanne Gerdner decided to relocate this summer to central Virginia from Ridgewood, N.J., a suburb of New York City, they had a fairly large range of choices to consider. They looked at homes on the market in Richmond, and they looked in Williamsburg, as well. Then they chose a five-bedroom, 3,400-square-foot house in the Brickshire community, which is located off North Courthouse Road in New Kent County, almost exactly halfway between the two cities.
“The location was important because it’s close to work, shopping and restaurants” in both cities, David Gerdner said. The 700-acre development’s extensive amenities played a key role in the Gerdner’s decision, too.
Designed around the Brickshire Golf Club, the master-planned community offers tennis courts, a swimming pool and an activity field, as well as two stocked ponds, a 24-hour exercise facility and an owners clubhouse with a caterer-friendly kitchen. In addition, the community has 3 miles of paved walking trails.
The membership fee for the homeowners association covers access to all amenities except the golf course.
The development recently upgraded the clubhouse and activity center, and it continues to add new amenities, as well. It’s currently in the planning stages to add an outdoor pavilion with a bar and seating for social events.
“We’re waiting for plans from the landscape architect,” said Leo Vozel, president of the Brickshire Community Association and a Brickshire resident since 2007. “The plan is to have it done by Memorial Day next year.”
That’s not the only construction the subdivision is seeing. The first house in Brickshire was built in 2001, and the majority of its approximately 650 houses were built between 2003 and 2008. The Brickshire community will have approximately 1,100 houses when it’s built out.
Because most of the existing homes were custom-built, the architectural styles range widely. Transitional homes with first-floor master suites are popular, but the development also has examples of Cape, Ranch and Colonial Revival.
Home sizes range from 1,800 to 7,000 square feet. Home builders active in Brickshire have included LifeStyle Home Builders, Emerson Builders Inc., McMahon Homes Inc. , Bel Arbor Builders Inc, E. Wayne Norman Inc., Southern Traditions LLC, JA Custom Builders LLC and Ray A. Williams Custom Homes.
Patio homes in the no-exterior-maintenance section of the development range from the upper $200,000s to the low $300,000s, and houses in the rest of community range from $300,000 to $1 million.
Brickshire’s location and its amenities are among its top attractions for homebuyers, but it also offers something that’s a little harder to quantify: a sense of community.
“People here are very friendly,” Vozel said. “When you walk in Brickshire, people wave. I wasn’t used to that in New Jersey.”
The Gerdners are still unpacking, and they haven’t had a chance to sample the amenities or attend the community’s many social events. (An outing next month offers residents a chance to take a boat tour of the James River, for example.) But they’ve already taken note of the neighborhood’s friendly “spirit of community,” Gerdner said.
