Developed by Stephen Alexander Homes from cherished property previously owned and nurtured by Santo Cogliandro, who after arriving in the United Stated though Ellis Island in 1906, headed south and purchased the 12 acres of land now known as Sommerton.

The Cogliandro’s went on to farm the land throughout the years where they built a farmhouse and grew broccoli and cauliflower. One of Cogliandro’s sons, John J. subsequently built silos, grain dens and had a herd of Holstein cattle. His granddaughter, Christine Parrish and her four siblings were born and raised at the farmhouse. Santo Cogliandro could never have imagined what his farmland would one day become, but, his grandaughter, Christine Parrish, says that “the beauty of the new Sommerton subdivision would have made him proud”.

Located just off Kempsville Road, The neighorhood design of Sommerton, a 90 unit townhome community, is reminiscent of older neighborhoods such as Norfolk’s Colonial Place, Ghent and those in Charleston, SC., where Old World architecture, including metal roofs, stone chimneys and old-fashioned street lights with ladder racks help provide a small-town, historical district feeling.

Since its development, the community has received several Stanley Awards from the Tidewater Builders Association. Those awards include: Best Home Design, Kitchen, Master Bath, Interior Design and Media Room. The Southeastern Virginia Community Association Institute’s awarded Sommerton as the”Best Medium Sized Association of the Year” for 2012.

Sommerton residences were available in 12 floor plans, which included quadriplexes, townhomes and detached single-family homes.
