Private Retreat in New Kent Ready For New Owner

Every home has a story

John Womeldorf knows that every home has a story. As an experienced realtor with a deep love for Williamsburg and the surrounding areas, John looks beyond the basic features of the homes he sells. In his “Every Home Has A Story” series, John introduces potential buyers to the aspects of a home that they can’t see by viewing it online or attending a showing. By interviewing the sellers and writing about what makes each home so special, John helps his clients go from trying to see themselves living in an unfamiliar house to envisioning their family moving into their dream home.

Private retreat in New Kent

Christina and John Jenkins purchased 15940 Kent Flatts Road in 2013. A military family, the couple had never purchased a home of their own because they had always lived in military housing. When they drove down the long driveway and first laid eyes on the home and saw the sprawling, 25+ acres of land, they were sold.

While only about three acres of the property is cleared, the rest of the land is wooded and features a beautiful pond. “There was a feeling of peacefulness the moment we first saw the land,” says Christina.

Built in 2000, the 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom Colonial is a private oasis for anyone looking to enjoy the benefits of country living with easy access to nearby towns for entertainment, dining and more.

Now that the Jenkins are relocating to Tennessee, they are ready to pass the home on to a family who will enjoy it as much as they have.

Picturesque Colonial

At the end of a long asphalt driveway sits this beautiful, white Colonial surrounded by open green space, lovely landscaping and its own private pond. The home has been lovingly maintained and is warm and inviting upon entering. Perfect for hosting holidays and parties, there is plenty of space to gather in the large living room which also features a very unique fireplace with custom molding. A formal dining room opens into a big kitchen with ample counterspace for preparing family meals. The home features hardwood floors upstairs and clay tile flooring downstairs.

In the years the Jenkins resided on Kent Flatts Road, they repainted the primary bedroom a neutral, tan color and completely renovated the primary bathroom. They removed part of a wall to let more light in and did an all-glass enclosed shower with river rick bottom, and tiled all the way to the ceiling. They added new tile flooring, a new tub and new toilet. The vanity was redone with granite countertops, new sinks, mirrors, and light fixtures. The primary bedroom also features a very spacious walk-in closet.

Enjoying nature inside and outside

For Christina, her favorite room in the home is the sunroom. Situated on the side of the house, the Florida room offers breathtaking views of the trees and private pond, and is a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy a moment of peace and tranquility.

When you head out back you enter onto a two-tiered deck leading to a top-of-the-line pool and spa. The deck recently had new boards put in and was painted, and the 20-foot Endless Pools Swim Spa features an underwater treadmill and Bluetooth speakers.

With 25+ acres of land to explore, having access to an ATV or other off-road vehicle is ideal. Luckily for the buyers of this home, the Jenkins are leaving their behind, which is currently stored in the detached two-car garage. Another two-car garage is attached to the home. There is also an outdoor shed that is great for storing equipment, as well as a chicken coop that already has a nesting box and roosts. For those wanting to explore on the ATV, there are paths to ride through 22 acres of your own terrain. “It’s very peaceful being out here on a private road with only six other homes,” says Christina.

Christina says one of the most magical times the year on the property is when it snows, and you don’t have to worry about losing power with the automatic, whole-house generator. The Jenkins have had it serviced regularly and it is in great working condition.

For those looking for privacy and a place off the beaten path, 15940 Kent Flatts is not visible from the main road and the asphalt driveway leads you through a tunnel of trees before you end at the beautiful country colonial.

The private pond is not only picturesque, but features a deck for relaxing as well as recreation activities like paddleboating (there is a paddleboat on the property that conveys) and fishing. The Jenkins built a deck down by the pond to sit and relax, and left some chairs behind for the new owners to immediately take a load off once they move in.

Peaceful surroundings

For Christina, the overall feeling of being at home and being at one with nature is the thing she loves most about the home and what she will miss most. “It’s very peaceful watching the wildlife,” she says. “Deer raise their babies, turkeys too. I enjoy all of that. There are also fruit trees and I enjoy eating apples, cherries and plums that grow wild here on the property.”

While the location of the home is remote, it is only a five-minute drive from Interstate 64. The New Kent Schools are located all about five miles from the home, as well as several restaurants and wineries. Christina says she likes to go to Toano, which is just a short drive away, for running errands, and Williamsburg is only about 25 minutes away. The home is also nine miles from the small town of West Point which offers quaint shops, restaurants and annual events.

According to Christina, this home is perfect for anyone who wants their own land and loves being outside. “The sunsets here are beautiful, and in the winter when it snows the entire property looks like a winter wonderland with the snow in the trees and ice on the pond.” The land and privacy are the things Christina is going to miss the most.
