Royal New Kent Golf Course has new owner

Six months after it was left dormant by its owner, a local golf course is set to be revived by an out-of-town buyer that’s looking to add to its established stake in the market.

Royal New Kent Golf Club in New Kent VA was sold June 1 to South Carolina-based Wingfield Golf.

The company, which also owns nearby Club at Viniterra and manages neighboring Brickshire Golf Club, confirmed last week it had been under contract to purchase Royal New Kent and its 282 acres.

The company plans to invest around $2 million to restore Royal New Kent with a goal of reopening by spring 2019. To bring Royal New Kent back to life, Tuck said Wingfield plans to redo the bunkers, which includes the purchase of 1,500 tons of sand. It also will convert the greens from bent grass to champion Bermuda grass, along with upgrades to the irrigation system, pump station and clubhouse.  Wingfield plans torestore Royal New Kent more in line with its original design from 1996. It was designed by the late Mike Strantz, a course architect who designed only seven or eight courses before his death at age 50.

The 22-year-old course has been closed for play since the end of 2017, as it and sister clubs Brickshire and Stonehouse were put up for sale by their shared owner, Traditional Golf Properties.

Stonehouse shut down around the same time and remains closed. Brickshire was purchased in March by its homeowners’ association for $2 million and has remained open for play.

Wingfield will look to market the threesome of courses between Royal New Kent, Brickshire and Viniterra, which it purchased in 2012.

The planned community of Oakmont Villas surrounds Royal New Kent.  The community offers both age targeted villas, single-family detached homes and townhomes.

Ideally situated in New Kent County, it’s located between Richmond and Williamsburg. Low county taxes with beautiful rural surroundings. Most houses back up to the golf course or wetland areas. Ground maintenance includes lawn, irrigations, trash and snow removal.
