Sounds of Summer in Yorktown: One of My Favorite Summer Traditions on the Water

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you already know I’m a bit of a music junkie. From small intimate shows to full-blown festivals, I’m always chasing that perfect combination of great sound, good people, and a setting that just feels right.

And right near the top of that list every single summer?

Yorktown’s Sounds of Summer concert series.

There’s just something about live music on the York River that hits differently. The breeze off the water, boats drifting by, the sun setting behind the stage… it’s one of those experiences that reminds you exactly why people love living in this part of Virginia.

Free Live Music on the Waterfront (Yes, Really)

One of the best parts about Yorktown’s concert lineup is that it’s completely free.

Let that sink in for a second.

We’re talking about a full summer schedule of talented regional bands, set against one of the most scenic backdrops in Hampton Roads—and it doesn’t cost a thing.

Yorktown actually hosts multiple concert series throughout the year, along with special events like a performance under the stars by the Virginia Symphony. But in my opinion, Sounds of Summer is the crown jewel.

2026 Sounds of Summer Lineup

This year’s lineup brings 14 bands to the Riverwalk Landing stage, covering everything from beach music and country to jazz, R&B, and high-energy party bands.

Thursdays | 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Mid-May through late August (no show July 2)

Here’s the full schedule:

May 21 – BJ Griffin

May 28 – The Embers (a longtime beach music favorite)

June 4 – BrassWind

June 11 – WonderLand

June 18 – En’Novation

June 25 – The Main Event Band

July 9 – The Gentlemen & Their Lady

July 16 – Uncle Jesse

July 23 – The Tidewater Drive Band

July 30 – The Nashville Nights Band

August 6 – 10 Spot

August 13 – Slapnation

August 20 – Band of Oz (another beach music staple)

August 27 – The Deloreans

If you like variety, this series delivers. Some nights you’re dancing to beach music, the next week it’s funk, then country, then a full-on party band.

My Pro Tips (From Someone Who’s Been to a Lot of These)

Let me save you a little trial and error…

1. Get there early

The grassy area in front of the stage fills up fast, especially on perfect weather nights.

2. Bring your setup

Chairs, blankets, coolers—you’ll see everything from simple lawn chairs to full-on picnic spreads.

3. Don’t forget your dancing shoes

Even if you don’t think you’re a dancer… give it about 20 minutes.

4. Food options are easy

Grab takeout from local Yorktown spots or hit the food trucks set up nearby.

5. Yes, you can bring alcohol

Just keep it within the designated concert area.

Parking & Getting Around

Parking is actually pretty manageable if you know where to go:

York Hall York-Poquoson Courthouse County Administration Building

And one of my favorite parts?

The Yorktown Trolley runs until 9:30 PM, which makes getting around super easy (and honestly kind of fun).

Why I Love Sharing Events Like This

This is exactly why I write about local events.

Sure—I help people buy and sell homes every day. But what I really love is helping people understand what it feels like to live here.

Because it’s not just about the house.

It’s:

Sitting on a blanket with friends by the river Running into neighbors you didn’t plan to see Listening to live music as the sun sets over the water

That’s the lifestyle people are really buying into when they move here.

And events like this?

They’re a big part of that story.

Thinking About Living Closer to This?

If you find yourself coming to Yorktown more and more for events like this… you’re not alone.

I’ve helped quite a few folks make the move to be closer to the waterfront, the trails, and yes—these summer concerts.
