Spring/Summer 2018 Activity Brochure Available for James City County

James City County Parks & Recreation invites you to a spring and summer of fun – with over 120 summer camps for the kids, more than 25 special events designed to connect and cultivate community and hundreds of family programs and outings, classes and activities. There’s truly something for everyone!  Copies of the brochure can be downloaded online or picked up at the James City County Recreation Center, the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, the Satellite Services Office in Toano, the Freedom Park Interpretive Center, County parks, all public County government offices and the James City County and Williamsburg libraries.

Easter Egg Extravaganza, Free!
March 31
Over 10,000 eggs for the hunt! For ages walking to 7 years. Two hunts: one, divided by age, at Warhill Sports Complex, 5700 Warhill Trail on the baseball fields, 9:30-11:30 a.m.; and one at the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center (AFCC), 8901 Pocahontas Trail in Grove, 1-2 p.m.  Also featured are face painting, refreshments for purchase and more! Bring your Easter basket and camera! Co-sponsor: Williamsburg Parks & Recreation. Weather permitting.

ovie Nights, Free!
April 6, 6-8 p.m. at the AFCC. Bring a blanket/pillow and join us for a family friendly movie! Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Stop by the Center Front Desk for a full schedule of movies. Movies are held the first Friday night of every month throughout the year.

Bikes Out of Hibernation, Free!
April 7, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park (CRP). Safety tips and fun rides! Weather permitting; rain date is April 8. 1350 John Tyler Highway.

Singletrack Maniac 50k Trail Run
April 14, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. at Freedom Park (FP). Experience the park in a whole new way! Beginners and experienced riders welcome, ages 18+. Advance registration required, call 757-259-4176. $65/runner. Info: Maniac 50K. 5537 Centerville Road.

Family Fun Night
April 14, 7-9:30 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center (JCCRC). Join us for a night of family fun and entertainment!  Preregistration recommended, but not required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Ages 13+, $5/person & 12 & younger free. 5301 Longhill Road.

Movies Under the Stars, Free! 
April 27, 8:30 p.m. at CRP. Enjoy some of the great box office titles out under the stars. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks. All ages welcome, children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Scheduled feature: Despicable Me 3 PG; movies subject to change. Movies offered throughout the summer. Weather permitting.

Summer Camp Fair 2018, Free!

Black Settlement Presentation & Book Signing, Free!
April 28, 3-4 p.m. at Freedom Park. Come learn from a descendant of those who lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park. Additional presentation on Sept. 22.

Proclamation Ride
May 4, ride starts 8:15 a.m. at Jamestown Beach Event Park (JBEP). May is Bike Month! Join us in Richmond at the Capitol to collect the Governor’s “May is Bike Month” writ. From there, ride back to James City County where the proclamation will be presented to our local government officials. Shuttle service provided to Richmond. Info: bikewalkwilliamsburg.org/

Pedal the Parkway, Free!
May 5, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. along the Colonial Parkway. The Williamsburg/James City County Biking Community’s signature event has been cruising for more than 21 years! The Colonial Parkway will be closed to vehicles allowing cyclists, runners and walkers to enjoy the ride at their own pace. Helmets required for cyclists. Info: bikewalkwilliamsburg.org/.

Cap2Cap Ride
May 12, 6:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Ride starts at the Charles City County Courthouse, Charles City, VA, 10760 Courthouse Road.
Join over 2,000 riders for this unforgettable day as you peddle through 400 years of history between Virginia’s past and present capitals. Visit virginiacapitaltrail.org for details on this full day of outdoor fitness and fun. 

Family Fun Fest 
May 19, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Enjoy petting animals, inflatable rides, family entertainment, music, contests and the annual Fun Run! Food, local craft and business vendors onsite. Admission: $5/car (cash or check only). Weather permitting.

Karaoke in the Park, Free!
May 26, 7-9 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Sing the night away while enjoying the park! All ages welcome; 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Offered throughout the summer. Weather permitting

Neighborhood Block Party
June 1, 5:30-8 p.m. at AFCC. Join us for a community night of fun and food plus inflatables, arts and crafts, fitness demonstrations, a D.J. and dance music, prizes and more! All ages welcome; 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Weather permitting.

June 2 is National Trails Day!
To celebrate, join us at Freedom Park for any of the following FREE hikes or rides! Pets and children must be accompanied by an adult.
• Forest Explorers Walk & Talk – nature program (9 a.m.) and guided walk (10 a.m.) held the first Saturday of every month
• Tails on the Trail, 9-11 a.m., self-guide trail adventure for you and your dog
• Trek the Trail, 9-11 a.m., self-guided family walk for you and your furry friend
• Beginner’s Mountain Bike Ride, a group ride offering basic mountain bike instruction. Info: email president@evma.org

Longest Day of Play
June 21, beginning at 5:47 a.m. through sunset, we cater to the sun and offer recreational activities all day long including extended hours, sport activities, fitness classes and other outdoor programming. Look for more information beginning April 15.

Student Art Show & Exhibit, Free!
June 22-July 13, exhibit available during Williamsburg Library operating hours. Our oil painting and pastel students display their talents in this annual exhibit. View many unique pieces with some available for purchase. 515 Scotland Street.

Skate Jam
Skateboard Competition: June 22, 5 p.m. at the Skate Park (adjacent to the JCCRC); BMX Competition: June 23, 5 p.m. All ages/experience levels welcome! Skateboards, bikes, food, live local music and prizes! Participants are divided into experience categories and judged on style, flow and difficulty of the run. $10/participant/day. Weather permitting.

Freedom Stories & More, Free!
June 23, noon-3 p.m. at Freedom Park. Join Williamsburg native Dylan Pritchett, best known as ‘The Storyteller,’ along with other Virginia Black Storytellers (VirBS) as they share with you Freedom Stories at Freedom Park plus unique crafts for kids, music and food available for purchase. All ages welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Spencer’s Ordinary Wreath Ceremony & Presentation
June 26, 10 a.m. at Freedom Park. Memorial service honoring the Americans who gave their lives in the Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary.

Park to Park Bicycle Tour
July 14, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the James City County Marina. Register early for this annual self-guided bicycle tour through a variety of County parks. Fee ($5-$20/person depending on ride option) includes refreshments, lunch, pool admittance at CRP, maps and support vehicles to help out tired riders. Offered in partnership with Williamsburg Area Bicyclists. Save $5/person if you register by June 30. Weather permitting.

Butterfly Festival
August  4-5, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Freedom Park.
Interact with hundreds of butterflies at the Williamsburg Botanical Garden! $5 donation suggested to help the Garden grow. Weather permitting.

Drool in the Pool
September 8, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at CRP. Pool passes for your dog will be available at the gate! Music, refreshments and goodies featured! $10/dog. All proceeds benefit the animals of Heritage Humane Society. Info: visit heritagehumanesociety.org. Weather permitting.

Harvest Festival & Scarecrow Stuffing
September 15, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at CRP. Arts and crafts, food, games, inflatables and Scarecrow Stuffing! First come, first served while supplies last. Admission: $5/car (cash or check only), $20/scarecrow (includes all supplies). Don’t forget your camera! Weather permitting.

James RiverFest, Free!
September 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at JBEP. Family-oriented and environmentally focused, the event celebrates and builds advocacy for the James River. Hands-on educational activities for children, interpretive paddles hosted by the James River Association, a live archaeology dig and opportunities to reduce waste and improve water quality through innovative designs. Weather permitting.
