The Perfect Vacation Home in Williamsburg-For Sale

When looking to purchase a vacation home in Williamsburg, Sandy and Matt Hand knew they wanted two things – walkability and to be in close proximity to Colonial Williamsburg. They found everything they wanted and more in 308 Page Street.

A full-time resident of Hersey, PA, Sandy and her family have been traveling to Williamsburg for more than 25 years. “We love to be in new environments and we love tradition, so we come down to Williamsburg as often as we can,” she says. “The town has everything we like, but we especially love the history and the fact that each season has something new to offer.”

When the Hands used to come into town on vacation, they would stay at the Williamsburg Lodge, but in 2017 they decided they loved Williamsburg so much it was time to make an investment and purchase some real estate.

Though Sandy enjoys living in Hershey, she also loves breaking out of her daily routine and commitments. Coming down to Williamsburg just for the weekend, she finds she is able to recharge her batteries and just be with her family. At home, she might be tempted to jump on her laptop and do some work, but in Williamsburg her family is all together and constantly doing something fun. “When we are In Williamsburg, we are always doing the things we love and not just the normal day-to-day stuff. We like to keep busy, so we are always walking to Colonial Williamsburg, going to Busch Gardens or Water Country, playing golf at Golden Horseshoe or having dinner and drinks at the Williamsburg Inn or La Tol Teca, both of which are walking distance from the house.”

With family in Richmond and Williamsburg, Sandy’s home has become a gathering place for everyone. Because of its stellar location in the historic area, her house is always where they start and end any outing in the ‘burg.

“If you love Colonial Williamsburg, buying something in this price range that is this modern, fresh and so close to the historic area, there’s just nothing that compares.”

Location, Location, Location

When looking for a house in Williamsburg, the Hands knew they wanted something that was walking distance to Colonial Williamsburg. “We love CW and love the walking lifestyle,” she says. “We love how it transports us back to a different time. When we are down here we are constantly walking our dogs through the colonial area and Merchant Square, walking to dinner and just wandering around until we stumble across something going on. We love the ability to walk through town and discover and see new things. When you live here you are in the middle of everything, so you are never having to look for parking spots or deal with traffic. You just walk outside. Once we park we don’t have to get into the car again until we go home.”

Though Sandy loves the modern design of the house, it was really the location that drew her to the home the most. “We love taking our dogs to CW and sitting outside and having a bite to eat at Chowning”s Tavern.”

The Hands also love going to the Williamsburg Winery, Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Battlefields. Their two children enjoy bringing friends down to Williamsburg and have the freedom to go where they want to go, particularly to the theme parks or the Williamsburg Premium Outlets.

Sandy and her family also love walking to Second Street restaurant and La Tol Teca “Just being in Williamsburg always feels like a vacation,” she says.

Modern living in the middle of the Colonial Capital

Many of the homes in the colonial area are, well, colonial in style. The addition of Capitol Landing Green offers residents the ability to own fresh, bright, modern homes in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg. “We love the house and all of the amenities that come with where it is physically located, and the only thing we really upgraded were the plantation blinds,” says Sandy.

The layout of the home is very functional for a family for four. Sandy’s son and daughter each have their own room, and the large master bedroom features a master bathroom with a large jacuzzi tub and walk-in shower.

The neighborhood itself Sandy describes as cute and quaint. “It’s a total neighborhood feeling,” she says. “The neighbors are very friendly and welcoming. They’re always in touch with us via email while we are away, keeping us up-to-date. It’s not uncommon to have a neighborhood party, and the HOA is only $160 a month.” Homeowners have their yards and landscaping taken care of for them by the HOA.

The community features two restored homes updated for 21st Century living located around a community green space along with fourteen new homes that range in size from 1,600 SF to about 2,700 SF, and feature 10’ ceilings downstairs and 9’ ceilings upstairs. Many quality features are standard features from the builder including Hardi-plank siding and PVC trim. Two neighborhood parks provide the residents outdoor recreational opportunities.

“The neighborhood has an adorable gazebo and walking paths for walking dogs which we love,” says Sandy.

Practically new

Though the house was purchased by the Hands in 2017, they have visited less than 20 times in the last two years and are the first owners of the property. When you first enter the home it definitely gives off a “brand new” feel with its light colors, open floorplan, high ceilings and large island with granite countertops.

The tall ceilings – 10’ on the first floor and 9’ on the second, add to the bright and spacious feel of the home. When Sandy first saw the house, she loved everything and felt that it fit their style perfectly. “The hardwood flooring, room sizes, built-ins, and granite countertops were all great,” she says. “We were especially pleased with the appliances. Sometimes builders don’t put the best appliances in a home unless you upgrade them, but ours are beautiful, stainless steel and high-end. As a matter of fact, I went out and bought the same dishwasher for our home in Hersey because I loved it so much.”

Though they only stayed in the house less than two dozen times, the Hands found it to be the perfect place to host gatherings. “We are the house that people go to,” Sandy says. “Everyone comes here because we are centrally located. It’s great during the holidays when the Grand Illumination is going on to tell everyone to just come to our house and we will walk over. Our home is always where we start and ultimately where we end up.”

Thinking ahead

Sandy and her husband know that Williamsburg is where they eventually want to retire, so purchasing a home now has allowed them to begin paying it down while they are still working. Though 308 Page Street is in the perfect location, the couple is moving just a few doors down to another unit in Capitol Landing Green with a two-car garage and a first-floor master.
