“The Pool House of Williamsburg”- A One of A Kind Home

Every home has a story

John Womeldorf knows that every home has a story. As an experienced realtor with a deep love for Williamsburg, John looks beyond the basic features of the homes he sells. In his “Every Home Has A Story” series, John introduces potential buyers to the aspects of a home that they can’t see by viewing it online or attending a showing. By interviewing the sellers and writing about what makes each home so special, John helps his clients go from trying to see themselves living in an unfamiliar house to envisioning their family moving into their dream home.

Moving to the Colonial Capital

Melanie and Wil Baak moved to Williamsburg fairly recently, and have only been at 108 Northpoint Drive for about two years. They moved here from Texas when Melanie was recruited as the President of Stratford University. Unfortunately, Stratford was forced to permanently close causing Melanie to have to explore new career options. The Baak’s have since moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida so she can assume her new role as the Dean of Academic Affairs of Keiser University.

Just a few years ago, when the Baaks were moving to Williamsburg, they looked at nearly every home that was on the market. 108 Northpoint Drive immediately stood out to them because of the indoor pool. “We love to swim,” says Melanie. “I swim for my knees and this home gave me the ability to keep my knees in shape year-round. It’s just a fantastic place to be.”

The Baaks are also history buffs and were drawn to the history of the Williamsburg area, and the home’s proximity to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. “There is such a rich history here, you can feel it in the air.” The Baaks were especially drawn to the fact that the house is located about a two-minute drive from Colonial Williamsburg and just off of the Colonial Parkway, so Jamestown and Yorktown are just a short drive away.

The nature surrounding the home was also a huge draw for them, as well as the community in Kings Point. “Our next-door neighbors have lived there for 60 years and all of the others have been there 30 years or more,” says Melanie. “The community is well-established and we received the warmest welcome when we moved in. Neighbors came over to introduce themselves and brought goodies and offered to help us in any way they could. It’s a very deep, rich and loving community.”

“The Pool House”

When Melanie and Wil first moved in, their neighbors referred to their house as “The Pool House of Williamsburg.” Coming from Texas, the Baaks knew they wanted a home with a pool but didn’t think they would find one they could use year-round. The indoor pool allowed them to swim during all four seasons.

The floorplan of the home quite unique. The four-bedroom, three-bath house with an office covers 4,457 square feet and even has a separate apartment on the second floor with its own private entrance.

When you arrive at the home, a circular asphalt driveway brings you around front where there’s a hardscaped planter in the center. The home is completely surrounded by trees, including four beautiful crepe myrtles in the front yard and four more in the back. Though it is nestled in an established neighborhood, the home gives off the feel of wooded seclusion and privacy.

For those who love outdoor entertainment, the backyard is very large and great for hosting gatherings on the concrete patio. There is a lot of wildlife, and the Baaks have enjoyed watching the deer come and spend time in the yard. “There’s a tremendous amount of birds in the backyard and owls live there too,” says Melanie. “The backyard offers peace, quiet, nature and privacy. It’s lined with woods that back down to a creek, so there are no neighbors behind the home. In fact, the closest neighbor is quite far away. You can really feel the history of the area while relaxing outdoors.”

One-of-a-kind floorplan

While homes with indoor pools are hard to come by, this one is centered around the beautiful pool area. “It’s breathtaking when you first enter the home,” says Melanie.

Located off of one side of the pool area is the kitchen, which features granite countertops, sleek black appliances and an oversized island with seating. The kitchen is open to the living room and dining area.

The Baaks love their master bedroom. The large walk-in closet features built-ins and plenty of space, but their favorite thing about the master is the size of the master bathroom. The tub is gigantic, there are heat lamps and a large bench in the center where you can take a load off, sit to get dressed or even hire your own masseuse to give you a massage right there. The bathroom also overlooks the pool area, giving off a spa-like vibe.

Speaking of a spa, on the opposite side of the pool area is the sauna, guest bedroom (or exercise room), bathroom and laundry room. “The sauna is lovely any time of year but especially during the colder months,” says Melanie. “I love to go in there and warm up in the wintertime.”

The large utility room contains the washer and dryer as well as two large pantries and countertops that are perfect for sewing or crafting.

Off of the garage is the office area, which boasts built-in cabinets and ample sunlight. The office opens up into a vestibule area that can either take you outside to the backyard or upstairs to the second-floor apartment.

Upstairs is another two bedrooms, a full kitchen and living area. Because the apartment has its own entrance from the outside, it can serve a multitude of purposes, from a space for guests to have their own private quarters or even an opportunity to earn some rental income. The Baaks have used it as a suite for Wil’s mother when she would come to visit from the Netherlands.

Melanie wants prospective buyers to know that this home is one of a kind. “It’s unlike anything I have ever seen before,” she says. “It has the potential to be whatever you want it to be. It could be a family home, for entertainment, for visitors or even a great spot for a business. It has so much potential to be whatever someone dreams it to be.”

Living in Kings Point

Melanie says the neighborhood does an exceptional job at communicating, and there are several clubs for residents to join if they wish to do so. Halloween is one of Melanie’s favorite days of the year because of the way the neighborhood celebrates. “There’s a parade of children in their costumes and lots of festivities. It’s a magical holiday for the kids who live in the neighborhood.” Melanie also notes that she appreciates how the HOA welcomes everyone in a very non-intrusive way, and joining the association is optional. “If you don’t want to be a part of it, you don’t have to,” she says.

The Baaks say they will miss the history of the area. For Melanie, living in Williamsburg inspired her to trace her own genealogy and she learned that she had relatives who came here way back when. She felt like living here, albeit for a short amount of time, allowed her to connect with her past. “It’s a very inspirational place to live,” she says. “As Americans, we can all feel that here.”
