Williamsburg photo a top winner in contest

Highways & Byways: James City Road to Williamsburg Photographer: Roderick Perkinson of Williamsburg Location: Lake Powell Road in James City County

A photograph of Lake Powell Road in James City County by Roderick Peterson was among 10 top winners in the 2019 Virginia Vistas Photo Contest. Scenic Virginia conducts the annual photo contest, which also included more than 20 honorable mention awards this year.

Writes Roderick Perkinson: “My family has lived in a wooded area between Jamestown and Williamsburg for several generations. Lake Powell is on one side of this road, and Mill Creek [leading to the James River] is on the other side. Water from the lake used to flow across this road to a mill on the creek. The road has changed little in the last several hundred years. ”

Leighton Powell , executive director of Scenic Virginia, said the contest received more than 1,000 entries of beautiful scenes across the state. “There is so much to love in our beautiful Virginia, and our annual photo contest reminds Virginians how lucky we are to call this place home,” Powell said.
