Windsor Forest Renovated Contemporary For Sale

Every home has a story

John Womeldorf knows that every home has a story. As an experienced realtor with a deep love for Williamsburg, John looks beyond the basic features of the homes he sells. In his “Every Home Has a Story” series, John introduces potential buyers to the aspects of a home that they can’t see by viewing it online or attending a showing. By interviewing the sellers and writing about what makes each home so special, John helps his clients go from trying to see themselves living in an unfamiliar house to envisioning their family moving into their dream home.

First Impressions

While not as prolific as the ever-popular colonial home, contemporary gems do exist in Williamsburg. One such home has hit the market in popular Windsor Forest.

When Kourtney and Andrew Marcotte bought this home in 2017, they expected it to be their forever home. For the then-newlyweds, it was love at first sight. With its cathedral ceilings, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace flanked by cedar accent wallsthat are now painted a crisp white, and walls of windows, there was no denying the wow factor.

“We loved this home from the first time we laid eyes on it,” says Kourtney. “One look at the vaulted ceiling and we were already thinking about Christmas mornings here! We could imagine our kids coming out of their rooms and looking out over the railing down to the living room to see a massive Christmas tree!”

Indeed, the family has enjoyed several holidays with a massive Christmas tree adorning their living room. This is open concept living at its best.

“That was probably our favorite part,” Kourtney says. “The living room and the kitchen itself is really an open area. We have been able to entertain and host a lot of gatherings in the home because of how open the space is.”

Coming Home to a Peaceful Place

The 2800 square ft, four-bedroom, 2.5 bath home sits on a large half-acre lot. With its mature trees and manicured green space, it’s the perfect backdrop for this lovingly tended home.

“We cleared most of the lot, but the back area is pretty private,” Kourtney says. “We have enjoyed a lot of great evenings out on the back deck, which we’ll definitely miss.”

The property feels very private, but in reality, friends and neighbors are just a stone’s throw away. The serenity of the natural setting extends into the home itself, as natural light from sliding glass doors and banks of tall windows spills into the living space.  The spacious living room is painted a crisp white and accented with a beamed cathedral ceiling and skylights. A focal point is certainly the floor-to-ceiling fireplace wall that balances the gray and white color scheme with the warmth ofstone. There is a built-in wet bar on one end of the room, which, like other primary rooms on the main level, has brand new hardwood floors. The bright, airy living room has three large windows as well as glass sliders that lead to the back deck. The living room flows into a gourmet kitchen that has custom cabinetry, top of the line appliances including gas stove, quartzcountertops, and tile backsplash.

The house offers main level living, with a primary bedroom suite that features an accent wall of diagonally placed cedar planks, a large walk-in closet, en suite bathroom, and a private entrance to the back deck.  There’s also a separate dining room, half-bath, laundry room, and kitchen.

Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms. A loft/balcony overlooks the living room. The cozy, window-lit space could be used as a sunny reading nook.

There’s storage galore, with two hall closets downstairs, plus an under-stairs closet on the main level, and two closets in the upstairs hallway. There are walk-in closets in the primary bedroom, as well as one of the other second floor bedrooms.

Upgrades and improvements

Exterior renovations include a brand-new paint job and the resurfacing and staining of the front deck. The back deck has also been also newly stained. The large, fenced back yard includes a recently added storage shed.

Interior renovations include fresh paint (even ceilings!), interior doors replaced, new hardwood flooring throughout first floor and on stairs leading to newly carpeted second floor. The updated gourmet kitchen boasts newer top of the line appliances including ZLINE Professional gas stove, quartz countertops tile backsplash. There’s even a pot filler over the range, with an arm that enables the tap to swing out over the burners so that large stock pots can be filled where they will be heated.

The color palette is neutral, clean and crisp. Cabinetry in shades of grey pop against gleaming white walls. Contemporary fixtures in black and glass and/or brushed pewter complete the understated décor.

“A lot of blood sweat, and tears went into these renovations,” says Kourtney. “We never expected to leave, so we put a lot of love into every feature. The kitchen cabinets were custom built. We even have a pull-out microwave oven, which I think is pretty cool.”

Downstairs, the bathrooms were completely renovated with flooring, cabinetry and fixtures replaced.

There is also recessed lighting all through the home.

The home got a new roof in 2016 so that’s one improvement the Marcottes didn’t need to take on. They did, however, invest in new HVAC units (one in 2018, the other last year), and a new hot water heater in 2017. Additionally, the crawl space has been fully encapsulated.

Leaving a special neighborhood

When they moved to Windsor Forest, Kourtney and Andrew expected to grow their family in the lovely home they set about renovating.  “We didn’t plan to move,” says Kourtney. “But in true Marcotte fashion, once we get something done, we are on to a new project.”

Since 2017, the family has added two young children and a new opportunity has presented itself. They have found a beautiful home in York County with five acres, which they are very excited about.

“It’ll be perfect for our children and our family,” says Kourtney. “But we’ll miss this community, the great pool, our evening walks and the garden we have in the community garden. This neighborhood has been really special to us.”

It’s the kind of community where people of all ages gather at the clubhouse, pool, tennis courts, or playgrounds. There are many social functions sponsored by the volunteer HOA. In the past, regular events have ranged from an Easter Egg Hunt to a July 4th parade and picnics on Labor Day and Memorial Day.

“There are tons of HOA activities,” says Kourtney. “There is always something going on here.”

As the saying goes, real estate is all about location, location, and location and that’s true of this address too. The neighborhood is about a 10-minute drive to Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary. In terms of schools, the community is zoned for J. Blaine Blayton Elementary, Lois Hornsby Middle and Lafayette High School.

As a resident of Windsor Forest myself, I have raised my family here and I’m in a pretty good position to represent this community that I love to potential buyers.
