The Carriage Homes at Williamsburg Commons is a lovely community of 156 duplex carriage homes at the end of Commons Way off of Route 60 By-Pass Road in York County . This hidden community is nestled against the city limits of Williamsburg.
Carriage Homes won the York County Beautification Award . It has a beautiful entrance wall and wide pear tree and crape myrtle lined streets. It is an easy walk or drive to the College of William and Mary and Colonial Williamsburg. Many consider it one of the best kept secrets in the Williamsburg, VA area.
Almost off all of the homes offer first floor living with master bedrooms on the first floor as well as living, dining, kitchen. Some of the models offer lofts on the second floor or a loft plus a bedroom and additional bath. Making for a nice guest suite for out of town guests. The soaring cathedral ceilings make them feel much more spacious than they are. A very small number have second floor master bedrooms.
In addition to offering nearly 2,000 square feet of living space, quite a few of the Carriage Homes offer scenic wooded views and beautiful natural landscapes. The Carriage Homes at Williamsburg Commons are the perfect answer for the traveling RV enthusiast with it’s secure location to park recreational vehicles. Carriage Homes of Williamsburg has an RV lot located at the end of Bastille Ct. There are two sections; an upper lot and a lower lot. The upper lot is for the storage of large vehicles such as recreational vehicles and boat trailers. The lower lot is for small trailers and automobiles. The upper lot costs $150 per year and the lower lot costs $75 per year.
The builder (Williamsburg Homes ) offered four different models with various elevations. Houses are built as duplexes
All of the models have security systems, large eat-in kitchens and one car garages. All but the Randolph have first-floor master suites. Homes were custom built to buyer specifications with options that included : screened porches, sunrooms, walk-out basements, wet bars, bookcases and shelves, custom baths, extended garages, crawl space or solid foundation, workshop rec room and decks with hot tubs.
Patios were standard on flat lots and decks were standard on rolling lots. Covered private entries and gas log fireplaces in the family rooms were also standard.
What’s For Sale in Carriage Homes at Williamsburg Commons:
Models offered included the Randolph with three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. It features a foyer, patio, laundry room and optional entertainment center. The second-floor master suite also has a large walk-in closet. The formal living room is open to the second floor.
The Henry was another popular three-bedroom, three-bath model. The master suite and second bedroom are both on the first floor, along with a linen closet and optional laundry area. The dining room and great room, with fireplace and optional built-in shelves, are open to the second floor. The second floor featured a third full bath, open loft area and third bedroom with a walk-in closet with an entrance to the attic.
Activity groups within the community range from a Stitching Sisters Group: For those who just love to knit, crochet, cross-stitch, quilt, or sew.a Book Club, Annual neighborhood Picnics and more. An active Social Committee organizes and conducts social activities of interest to the residents of the Carriage Homes community. Previous Day Trips for Carriage Homes residents have included two trips to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Monticello and Ash-Lawn Highland in Charlottesville, presidential homes of Jefferson and Madison, and another trip to Montpelier, home of President James Madison. Our most popular trip
thus far has been to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis when over 40 Carriage Homes residents traveled by bus to visit the Naval Academy and historic Annapolis.
The basic lawn services provided by the HOA include grass mowing (front and side yards, not back yards), tree and shrub trimming, lawn treatment (fertilization, weed killer and prevention), aeration/over seeding, spring mulching, and application of lime as needed. Although backyards are not included the current landscape company will cut them for $15 per mow. They will also do a number of other backyard tasks if needed. Meet a few Williamsburg Commons new neighbors :
Bryce Hirsch and Sharon Willoughby recently purchased a home in the Carriage Homes community! They are joined the other “snowbirds” enjoying cool summers in their Wisconsin home and milder winters here in Williamsburg. Joining them are Lizzy, a terrier, and Tristan, a Doberman. Bryce and Sharon were drawn to our area by their love of history. Bryce is a retired instructor in
economics and food service management and is filling free moments with cooking, baking, and brewing. Sharon retired from the postal service and has been a Humane Society volunteer. She loves to ride and drive horses.
Lynn Underwood, has been a resident of Carriage Homes for 4 years. He was a Building Official with the City of Norfolk, VA. He is currently with the City of Hopewell. He has worked in the building safety profession that includes building code development at the state and national level for 34 years in four states (Washington, New Mexico, Arizona and Virginia) and in the District of Columbia. He is fully certified in all aspects of construction by the International Code Council and holds a Master Code Professional designation. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors with the International Code Council. Before that, he served on numerous ICC code development committees and was chair of ICC’s Global Membership Council. He is past President and Board Member with the Virginia Building and Code Official’s Association. He has written eight books on construction or inspection; the most recent title: Residential Construction Codes, Second edition, published by Dewalt. He also writes regularly for several national magazines including Fine Homebuilding.
A graduate engineer, Lynn is a former home builder in New Mexico, a licensed contractor in Virginia and teaches construction and building code classes with the Virginia Building Code Academy, and Virginia Community Colleges.
He served as a Building Code Expert in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He led a team of inspectors to El Salvador to inspect restoration work performed by USAID projects. Twice, he traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan on a similar outreach. In 2010, he travelled to Libya to provide training on energy and building codes.
Before college, Lynn enlisted in the USMC and served in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division. He enjoys Mexican food, all music, especially Motown. Among his interests are woodworking and photography.
Jane Powell, a new Williamsburg Commons resident recently retired and moved here from Northern Virginia. She has worked in financial management and environmental cleanup and lived in a variety of states, including Colorado, West Virginia, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee. Jane has loved visiting Colonial Williamsburg for many years, and you will see her around town, camera in hand, capturing its beauty through her photography.
